Abseilers have been hard at work dismantling part of the Aquatics Centre as the transformation of the Olympic Park moves into full swing.
They took down the last strip of the shell of the seating used on the east wing of the Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatic Centre, while all 17,500 seats have now been removed.
Workers will now prepare to replace temporary stands on either side of the building with glass windows, and the venue will then be fitted out as public leisure centre.
The work marks the handover of the newly named Queen Elizabeth Park to those charged with securing its economic future.
The £292million redevelopment programme will see an estate of 850 homes built where the basketball arena once stood, as well as parks, public spaces and other sporting facilities.Colin Naish of the London Legacy Development Corporation said the east London venue would be ‘a vibrant place for people to live, work and enjoy’ when it reopens in stages from next summer. At its peak, around 1,000 construction workers are set to work at the park during the transformation project.
