Mother’s Day 2024 is fast approaching and if you’re struggling to choose between buying a bath set, scented candle or makeup, it turns out that mums actually want something that won’t cost anything.
But what could the gift possibly be, you ask? You’ll be pleased to know that our mums simply want sleep, rest and alone time this year.
Research by the flower and gift retailer Arena Flowers has revealed that the number one gift mums are hoping for this coming Sunday (March 10) is some time to themselves.
The company analysed the /Parenting subreddit for posts containing the keywords ‘Mother’s Day gifts’.
After all the posts were collated, irrelevant ones were discarded and all the mentions of wanted gifts in the remaining 5,308 comments were collected and classified based on the type of gift mentioned.
Mums have seemingly moved away from requesting more extravagant gifts for mothering Sunday, which will probably come as a relief for grown up kids during the cost of living crisis.
Top 5 gifts mums want for Mother's Day
- Sleep/Rest/Alone time
- Handmade gifts
- Meals made by others
- Skincare treatments
- Flowers
Handmade gifts are in second place, because who doesn’t love a arts and crafts prezzie? If you’re struggling to decide on a DIY gift for your mum – that actually looks like you put effort into it – why not make her dreams come true by creating a dreamcatcher? A £13.95 kit from &Keep includes dreamcatcher ring, beads, twine, glitter and mess-free watercolour pencils.
Flowers still made the list at number five, but buying a bouquet does not have to break the bank and supermarkets are offering gorgeous options for less than £2.
Known as one of the most affordable supermarkets in the UK, you can spoil your mum with a selection of flowers starting from just £1.99 at Aldi, one of the cheapest Mother’s Day bouquets at the main supermarkets this year.
Launching in stores from Wednesday, March 6, the range includes the small but splendid Pocket Money Posy at £1.99.
The bouquet is both pink and yellow and will definitely brighten your mum’s day, complete with fresh chrysanthemums, roses, and gerberas.

The latest study follows a similar theme from commissioned in 2023, which found that the ‘traditional’ gifts we normally associate with Mother’s Day are falling out of favour, because mums wanted to spend time with their families.
The research was conducted by Red Letter Days and it found that a tenth of mums don’t want makeup or skincare products, or even handy appliances like a hot air brush. Air fryers were also mentioned.
Around 1,500 mums were polled, and 45% said that they would prefer ditching presents in favour of some quality time with their close ones.
Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, all mums deserve to feel appreciated.
