Richard Madeley has admitted Judy Finnigan is totally baffled by his Good Morning Britain routine.
The 67-year-old presenter is no stranger to early wakeups after decades on breakfast television, but he admitted he is still ‘paranoid about sleeping through’ and missing the start of the show.
Appearing on This Morning to celebrate ITV show GMB’s decade on air, he said: ‘I’m paranoid about sleeping through.
‘I have a ritual – I set them three times the night before and Judy says to me, “What are you doing? You know it’s set, what are you doing?” I say, “I have to do this”, otherwise I don’t sleep.’
Richard even has his alarm set at a very specific time to trick his brain into thinking its at a much kinder hour.
‘I’ve got three alarms, set for 4:01, one minute past four,’ he explained. ‘Because psychologically I say to myself, “I’m not getting up in the middle of the night, I’m getting up early in the morning.” ‘
He’s not the only one to set three alarms and hope for the best (we’ve all been there), and co-host Susanna Reid admitted she needs a few attempts to get up and ’em.
She said: ‘3:40 first alarm goes off, 3:45 second alarm goes off, and then 3:50, out of bed and on it.’
And This Morning star Ben Shephard shares Richard’s paranoia from his own GMB days when he’d actually wake up during the middle of the night to double check his alarms were set.
He’d even have one set on the other side of the room to force him out of bed, and we definitely relate to that.
Thankfully, it’s rare that any of the stars actually oversleep, although Ben did throw Ranvir Singh under the bus as he insisted she’s the only presenter he’s known to sleep through an alarm and get to the studio 30 minutes after they went on air.
It’s not always presenters who miss their cue, and Richard recently took a swipe at Madonna after claiming he once waited hours to interview her.

He didn’t reveal what outlet or show the interview was for, but insisted it ‘wasn’t worth’ the six hour wait.
‘It didn’t start until about one in the morning. I was so angry,’ he fumed, while his GMB co-star Susanna Reid asked: ‘Worth waiting for though?’
Richard retorted while giggling: ‘No it wasn’t, actually. She was weird.’
