Boy George has spoken about his comments about Liam Payne before his death and admitted they weren’t ‘very nice.’
Just over a month ago, the beloved pop star died after suffering a fatal fall from the third-floor balcony of his hotel suite in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The One Direction member was just 31 years old and his death caused huge shock waves as fans mourned the death of such a young talent.
The Culture Club singer, 63, revealed in a recent interview that he regretted the unkind comments about the singer that he made in the weeks before his death.
‘In the case of Liam Payne, I’d watched him a few days before it happened. I remember watching online and I’d actually put a message under a post saying “He’s off his nut”, which wasn’t very nice, but I felt it. I felt like he was out of control.
‘And when it happened, it just hit me, the same way that Amy Winehouse hit me, because it felt so senseless.’
The singer, whose real name is George O’Dowd, made this confession on Thursday’s episode of the High Performance podcast with Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes.
He also admitted he was completely shocked when he heard the news, believing it wasn’t true at first.
‘I was up at five in the morning, and it came up on the American news, and I literally was like ‘What the f**k?’ I was literally like ‘No, this isn’t real’. I couldn’t take it in.’
He added: ‘I care about his family. I watched the dad, heartbreaking. I was quite tearful about it. I actually really felt very sad.’
At the time of Payne’s death, George posted a message: ‘How sad is the death of Liam Payne. Just awful news to wake up to. God bless his family. I am absolutely shocked. R.I.P.’
George and Payne had previously had a public disagreement following the 2013 BRIT Awards.
George brought his 13-year-old niece Molly Fitzpatrick to the awards show and slammed the late singer for not taking a photograph with her.
‘Top marks to Harry Styles for stopping for a picture with my niece and B****x’s to Liam and the disrespectful w****r of a minder!’ he tweeted 9 years ago.
The Strip That Down for Me singer replied on Twitter at the time saying: ‘@BoyGeorge now now boy lets not tell porkies. Firstly thanks for getting my name wrong three times, then asking me where is liam?…awkward. Then when you finally got it right saying you wanted Niall instead.

‘If you would have asked me for a picture i would have stopped bro I just did what you said and pointed niall out for you so u just keep wearing ur strange hats and enjoy yourself my little Georgie pie… It’s still not cool you just look weird.’
In the podcast interview, Boy George went on to say that his advice to any young stars in the industry is to get therapy before you need it.
‘Get some therapy before you need it,’ he said. ‘I probably wouldn’t have done a lot of the things that I did had I had someone to talk to. If I’d had someone to teach me some philosophy, open my mind up about what I was capable of.’
Boy George is set to appear on High Performance on Thursday, November 21.
