As Christmas songs hit the airwaves, fans of this festive classic have been bowled over by a fact about its artist.
Released in 1958, Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree is a staple of Yuletide festivities.
In 2023 it officially nabbed the number one spot in the American singles charts 65 years after its release, making Brenda, 79, the oldest recording artist to top the US singles chart.
Her powerful vocals and catchy lyrics are part of what makes the song so iconic, and as TikTok user Jasmine Chiswell points out, there’s something even more impressive about the single.
When it was released, Brenda was just 13 years old, something that has left fans of the song ‘in shock’ as they believed she was much older when she shot to fame.
Sharing a clip of the song on TikTok, Jasmine wrote: ‘When I remember that this song was sung by a 13 year old and not an 80 year old…’
‘Baby ain’t no way she was 13. I think you mean 31. Yes she had to be 31. 🥰😂 But seriously,’ Deanarnld wrote in the comments.
Similarly shocked, Guapismimi added: ‘😳I am today years old when I found out about this lol.’
Other users thought it couldn’t possibly be true while others pointed out similarly young celebs who released hit songs, such as Judy Garland who was just 16 when she sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz.
‘Huh 😳 13? she sounds more adult than I do 😭,’ N3rdyMusicLov3r commented.
The song famously features in classic Christmas film Home Alone in the scene in which Kevin McAlister (Macauley Culkin) hosts his own Christmas bash.
A year before she rocked around the Christmas tree, Brenda achieved her first Billboard hit at age 12 with One Step at a Time.

Brenda has won a Grammy Award, four NARM Awards three NME Awards, and five Edison Awards and became the first women to be inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2023, she was named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest singers of all time.
