Bluey fans are ‘worried’ about the future of the children’s TV show after creator Joe Brumm’s statement.
Joe, 46, announced on the show’s official website he would be stepping away from the animated series after six years as he ‘couldn’t wrap his head around doing more seasons’.
However, he assured viewers Bluey would continue but under a different stewardship while he concentrates on the cartoon’s first film to be released in 2027.
Fans, though, are concerned about a ‘possible drop in quality’ if Joe is no longer helming Bluey as the show is his creative visions.
On Reddit, AnythingAlfred explained: ‘Considering how much of a fantastic writer he is and how much he understands the characters, I’m a bit worried about a possible decline in quality if another writer or writers take his place.’
Echoing their sentiment, Roysumai wrote: ‘It’s scary, and Bluey’s such a singular vision that it’s only right that it is, but I choose to be optimistic.
Bluey creator Joe Brumm's statement in full
I’m writing this to share some Bluey news – some good, some trifficult.
Let’s start with the good – after some time spent away from the series, working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love. Fast forward through a tonne of contracting and we’re about to embark on making an animated Bluey movie!
Now, for the trifficult. I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.
Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically.
My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with that wonderful group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope Bluey on their CV is a badge of pride for them.
To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.
Thank you for taking this show into your homes, the whole experience has been an impossible experience to describe.
‘In the worst-case scenario, we’ve got the 3 brilliant seasons so far, we’ve got the movie on the horizon, and nothing will take any of that away from us.
‘The TV show from here on out will be different, no question about that, but I’m almost certain that there’ll be stuff to enjoy about it, even if it’s not as special as the rest, and there’s nothing that they can do which will take away from the rest of the team’s achievements.’
On X, Bluey fans also shared their devastation over Joe’s exit with @SkullishaDemon sharing: ‘Joe Brumm making his departure from Bluey is a decision I respect, but also one that breaks my heart. The crew behind the show is obviously extremely talented but I’m starting to form this fear that the show won’t quite feel the same without Joe’s input #Bluey.’
@kindypuppy said: ‘bluey wouldn’t be the same without brumm, but bluey will always be the joy of many adults and children alike from its conception to the uncertain future of the series thank you joe brumm.’
@samsquareeyes added: ‘Big news but I’m not feeling great about a Brumm-less season of Bluey.’
Joe explained he was leaving the TV series as he didn’t feel he could ‘make a season as good as the last.’
