The time is nearly upon us to start looking into gym memberships, vowing to drink less, and setting a reading challenge.
But there’s one thing we’re all begging Netflix to add to their New Year’s resolutions list.
The streaming service has certainly treated us to a number of hits this year, from Baby Reindeer to One Day.
But whenever they give, they also seem to take – leaving fans devastated.
Once again this year, Netflix has axed several fan-favourite shows, and although many are set to be renewed, fans are begging for certain picks to return.
The likes of Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy and The Crown all came to their rightful ends this year after final seasons, but fans still haven’t forgiven the streamer for ending shows like The Midnight Club, Sense8, Snowpiercer and The OA unfinished.
We’ve rounded up five series that were heartbreakingly axed this year and last, that we want Netflix to one day bring back.
In the meantime, we’ll just have to hope that next year they listen to fans, and stop axing all their best shows.
Kaos
Fans were left devastated after Kaos was axed after just one season.
The eight-part comedy series was released on the streaming service in August, following three humans ‘as they discovered their common connection to a prophecy and to each other while dealing with the corrupt and arrogant gods of Greek and Roman mythology’.
It starred Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, Janet McTeer as Hera, Aurora Perrineau as Eurydice (‘Riddy’), Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Rakie Ayola as Persephone, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Debi Mazar as Medusa and Billie Piper as Cassandra.
However, despite proving to be a huge success with fans and spending four weeks in the Netflix top 10 charts upon its release, Kaos was cancelled after the first season.
It was originally thought to be continuing for two more seasons, after creator End of the F***ing World’s Charlie Covell explained the finale set up several potential storylines for future instalments.
Dead Boy Detectives
Dead Boy Detectives, based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book series, was axed after the author denied sexual abuse claims.
The series, which had one season and forms part of The Sandman universe, originally came out in April, but news of its axe was announced in August.
Across eight episodes, the show followed ghostly duo Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) who set up a crime-solving agency and solved supernatural cases from the afterlife.
It didn’t prove to be as much of a success as Sandman, and was axed despite reaching 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Brothers Sun
Just like the rest of us, Michelle Yeoh was left devastated when her show The Brothers Sun was cancelled after one season.
The action-comedy followed LA student Bruce (Sam Li) discover his family is the head of a triad gang, while his brother Charles Sun (Justin Chien) is an expert assassin.
It was hailed a ‘masterpiece’, with Michelle saying she was ‘heartbroken’ and admitting she struggled to ‘understand why’ it was axed.
The James Bond star lamented on Instagram: ‘Heartbroken… and finding it so hard to understand why… however, I am so very proud of My Brothers Sun family and what we presented to the world. ♥️✨ heads held high.’
Girls5Eva
Netflix originally saved musical comedy Girls 5Eva, before it was axed again.
It followed four women, Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Philipps), Gloria (Paula Pell) and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), who were part of a girl group in the early noughties.
They ended up fading into obscurity after being one-hit wonders, however, after a famous rapper sampled their song years later, reunited to try their luck again.
The series holds a 97% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, with ratings of 98%, 95% and 100% for the three seasons, however, it won’t be coming back again, after Netflix picked it up from Peacock.
More Trending
The news was announced by star Busy, who said the show was ‘dead’: ‘If Netflix won’t, I will (say it’s over). I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts. I don’t know. I actually just don’t know.’
Buying Beverly Hills
It was branded ‘one of Netflix’s best shows’, and followed in the success of Selling Sunset and the Real Housewives franchise, but Buying Beverly Hills was sadly axed after two seasons.
The unscripted series followed Mauricio Umansky (estranged husband of Real Housewives icon Kyle) and his staff, including their daughters, at The Agency.
