More schools across the UK are to remain closed today as the country continues to grapple with heavy snowfall and flooding.
This week’s winter weather has only intensified today, with up to 20cm of snow forecast in Scotland and icy showers lashing England.
With six Met Office yellow weather warnings in effect and more snow-ready frigid temperatures forecast, it’s safe to say a fair few schools have declared today a snow day.
Schools have been ‘frozen solid’, left without working boilers or had equipment damaged by the ice, Lancashire council officials say. Others remain inaccessible as sludgy black ice coats the roads and pavements looking more like ice rinks than anything.
After hundreds of closures yesterday across North Yorkshire and other North East counties, some are beginning to thaw. Nearly a dozen in Wakefield were shut yesterday – now the doors of just one are locked today. All are open in County Durham, too.
