*EMBARGOED UNTIL 00.01 BST, WED AUG 2 (19.01 ET, TUES 1)* Artistic reconstruction of a group of Burgessomedusa phasmiformis swimming in the Cambrian sea. See SWNS story SWSCjellyfish. The oldest-ever species of jellyfish to have roamed the oceans of planet Earth has been discovered - at 505 million years old. The free-swimming predatory jellyfish, named Burgessomedusa phasmiformis, was discovered from fossil records extracted from the Burgess Shale - a famous fossil-bearing deposit in the Canadian Rockies. The fossils of the jellyfish are remarkably well-maintained at the site and show the animal - comprised 95 per cent of water - had tentacles capable of seizing sizeable prey.

This may look like a swimming cap, but it's actually a 500 million-year-old predator
