A 10-year-old schoolgirl stunned experts when she unearthed dinosaur footprints while playing on a beach during a summer holiday walk. The youngster, named only as Tegan, was scouring the beach when she spotted a series of similar shaped holes on the stoney shore. Tegan believed the footprints could date back to pre-historic times - and her mum Claire contacted palaeontologists to find out. And museum experts believe the five footprints, found near Penarth, South Wales, are more than 200million years old and could belong to a dinosaur called the camoltia - part of the sauropodomorpha sub order. Pictured here is Tegan WALES NEWS SERVICE

Asteroid impact. Illustration of a large asteroid colliding with Earth on the Yucatan Peninsula in (what is modern day) Mexico. This impact is believed to have led to the death of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. The impact formed the Chicxulub crater, which is around 200 kilometres wide. The impact would have thrown trillions of tons of dust into the atmosphere, cooling the Earths climate significantly, which may have been responsible for the mass extinction. A layer of iridium- rich rock, known as the K pg boundary, is thought to be the remnants of the impact debris.

*EMBARGOED UNTIL 13.00 BST, THURS JUNE 20 (08.00 ET)* Reconstruction of Lokiceratops surprised by a crocodilian in the 78-million-year-old swamps of northern Montana, USA. Release date June 20 2024. A "remarkable" new species of giant horned, plant-eating dinosaur is among the largest ever found. Lokiceratops rangiformis, a cousin of Triceratops, was identified from a skull discovered in the ancient swamp "badlands" of Montana along the USA-Canada border in 2019. It is distinguished by several unique features, including two huge blade-like horns on the back of its frill and the absence of a nose horn. Scientists say the skull was longer than any other dinosaur within its group, Centrosaurinae, approaching the size of later horned behemoths.

Artist illustration of new dinosaur species Koleken inakayali. If you thought T-Rex had short arms, wait until you see this newly discovered dinosaur. The carnivorous species Koleken inakayali has been identified as living 70 million years ago. National Geographic Explorer Diego Pol and a global team of researchers and paleontologists uncovered the find in the La Colonia Formation of central Patagonia. The dinosaur's name derives from the language of the Tehuelche people of the region and refers to the claystone the animal was found in and the Tehuelche leader Inakayal.

EMBARGOED TO 0001 WEDNESDAY JANUARY 3 Undated handout artist impression of a Nanotyrannus attacking a baby T. rex. Fossils thought to belong to teenage Tyrannosaurus rexes are adults of another predatory but more nimble dinosaur species, scientists have said. A new analysis of the specimens suggests the animals who roamed the Earth 66 million years ago were not fast-growing juveniles but nearly full size, according to a report published in the journal Fossil Studies.
