She returns home and smashes the jug of whiskey in a fit of anger, incurring Ben's wrath. Judge Willie Hoyt and his wife rescue Violet and send her to a boarding school on the Hudson River. She later marries Allen Grey, a student at the U.S. Military Academy, but their happiness is threatened by Jed, who tries in vain to claim Violet for himself. After Ben is mortally wounded by Jed, he reveals that Violet is really the daughter of socially prominent and wealthy parents, who lost her to a Gypsy when she was only a child.
