TV presenter Martin Roberts has given an update on his wellbeing, following an "emergency operation" he underwent two years ago. Back in 2022, the presenter, now aged 61, shared about his urgent hospital admission after experiencing chest pains.
Doctors had discovered fluid around his heart, which was critically impairing its function, prompting immediate surgery to remove it. The ‘Homes Under the Hammer’ frontman had indicated that he was told he had mere "hours to live" prior to the life-saving procedure.
Being told to "slow down" after his close call, Martin has nonetheless been actively engaged in refurbishing a pub in Wales. Speaking with MailOnline, he conveyed anxiety over "twinges" felt in his chest since, admitting to moments of panic at any sign of discomfort.
Despite uncertainty over "how much time" remains, Martin is driven to give his all to the current endeavour. He elaborated on the physical challenges faced in recovery, stating: "The physical side of things took a lot longer than we thought to get around."
He added: "I still get twinges and every single time I get a twinge in my chest, I panic.", reports the Mirror.
The heart issues remain a sensitive concern, something he believes others with similar experiences can "attest" to.
Such sensations trigger a "flurry of worry," as recalled by Martin who also spoke about a telling conversation with his consultant. Upon enquiring how long he might have survived without the operation, Martin disclosed the stark response: "probably had maybe two or three hours to live".
The former I'm A Celebrity contestant revealed that if he had died, he would not have been able to see his two children or achieve "all" of his goals. Martin expressed that he wouldn't be able to do "all the things" he aspires to in his life either, if he had passed away during the ordeal.
He characterised this as an aspect of the "psychological side" of the experience, which he believes takes "a lot longer to get over" than the "physical side". Martin went on to say: "I was told I need to slow down and take things easy and all that kind of stuff, and I've gone a completely other way."
Martin explained that's why he has the project in Blaencwm, where he's refurbishing a pub "for the community".
He mentioned that it's in partnership with "local kids," who are "disengaged and disadvantaged," adding that it's a chance for them to acquire skills in construction. He stated that it involves "doing lots of good," before expressing that he doesn't know "how much time" he's "got left" so he just wants to do "as much" as he "possibly can to help".
Martin concluded by saying it's about "making a difference" because that's "what you'll be remembered for."
