Joan Betty (Nan) POPLE (Locke)

(Locke) (Nan) Our remarkable best friend, Mum and Nan, Joan, passed peacefully on March 3 at her home, with her family aged 104, listening to Matt Monro. Joan was born in 1920 in Hove, the family moved to Tolworth when her father joined the Metropolitan police after a notable career during WW1.

Joan trained as a stenographer and was called up to serve the war effort working as a teleprint operator for the American War office in Devises. Joan married Norman Pople in 1941, after surviving Dunkirk and the campaigns of the 8th Army, Norman and Joan built their first home in Tolworth, where they welcomed two children Keith and Lynda.

The family moved to Pyford for a happy family life full of many holidays and parties. Mr Pople became a draughtsman for British Aerospace while Joan sat her civil service exams going on to work at HMP Send.

Joan and Norman retired to Send Marsh Green where Joan became an active member of the local community joining the WI and over sixties. Norman and Joan proudly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1991 before Norman passed away.

Joan was a devoted wife, mum and Nan who was well known for her epic Sunday dinners and love of music, particularly fond of Radio 2 which was on everyday in her home on the green. Joan, Lynda and family went on many happy family holidays in Europe and attended events at G Live up until Joan was 101.

Joan turned 100 in 2020 and received her much hoped-for 'telegram' from the queen who she adored and respected. The day was one of her happiest with a celebration family meal at the Onslow arms.

Joan remained independent and at home with the grateful support of her care team and her much respected G.P Dr Sharma. While mobility became an issue, she always had a kind word for all her team and was known for being happy to see everyone.

Joan will be remembered for her zest for life, passion for travelling, Radio 2, Queen Elizabeth, gardens, coffee, and her sunny character. Deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of meeting her. Joan, an inspiration, forever smiling in our hearts.

Celebration of life service to be held at St Mary's church in Send, April 2, 13:45. No black, informal flowers only celebration to follow at The Onslow Arms.
