A fresh feature has arrived on WhatsApp this week, with users able to apply filters and backgrounds on video calls. This addition aims to inject more vibrancy and fun into chats, reminiscent of similar options available on other video platforms like Zoom.

The clever technology powering your smartphone's camera can now focus on your face and shoulders, smartly hiding everything else behind you. This feature comes in handy when your room isn't exactly tidy or when you have family members or housemates in the background that you'd prefer not to show up during the call.

Users have the choice between ten distinct filters and ten diverse backgrounds. The expectation is that WhatsApp will continue to expand this selection over time.

WhatsApp describes the filters as tools to "create a more playful atmosphere," with names like 'Light leak', 'Dreamy', and 'Prism light. ' Meanwhile, the backgrounds offer a range of scenes from 'Blur' to domestic settings like 'Living Room' and 'Office', to the cheerful 'Cafe', tranquil 'Pebbles', or the gastronomic 'Foodie', reports the Express.

"Filters are designed to help you create a more playful atmosphere, whether that's adding a splash of colour or creating a more artistic feel for your video," WhatsApp commented. "With backgrounds, you can keep your surroundings private and transport yourself to a cosy coffee shop or comfortable living room for a more clean and polished look."

The app is also introducing 'Touch up' and 'Light up' options that utilise AI to enhance your appearance and the room around you for a better look during calls. This is akin to effects available on apps like Google Meet, which can artificially brighten your video feed - useful as we approach the impending gloomy British autumn.

Ensure you have automatic app updates enabled, as WhatsApp will be rolling out the update to the iPhone and Android versions of the app in the upcoming weeks. To activate any filter or background, during a one-on-one or group video call, tap to select effects in the top right of the screen and proceed from there.
