HL7 Version 3 Domain Information Model; Emergency Medical Services, Release 1
DESCRIPTION

The DIM is balloted as an informative document to be used as a reference in subsequent projects to develop or evaluate ANSI approved specifications and standards within the pre-hospital emergency medical services domain.

BENEFITS
- Facilitates activities intended to transform the uniform pre-hospital emergency medical services dataset as defined by the United States Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into an American National Standard
IMPLEMENTATIONS/CASE STUDIES
- The National Emergency Medical Services Information System Technical Assistance Center sponsored the development of this model, which is designed to support development of implementable specifications for communication of pre-hospital service information
DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND
This constrained model was developed based on the EMS Domain Information Model prior to the decision to develop CDA specifications. The EMS specification now in DSTU, and future anticipated specifications, will conform to the CDA constrained model. We hesitated to publish this model due to the divergence between the design it proposes for representing the DAM requirements in a RIM-based model and the CDA-based implementation guide currently in process, which is founded on the clinical statement, as it could cause confusion. We decided to publish anyway, both as a record of the analysis that was done and as a candidate foundation for potential future development, even though such development would more likely follow the patterns established by the CDA specifications.
