HL7 Version 2.5.1 Implementation Guide: Height and Weight Report, Release 1 (US Realm) [HL7 Version 2.5.1: ORU^R01]

DESCRIPTION

This document describes profile constraints on the HL7 V2.5.1 ORU^R01 Unsolicited Observation Message to meet the requirements of the transmission of height and weight data for calculating a patient’s body mass index (BMI). The purpose of the message profile specified in the guide is to transmit standardized structured height and weight data and patient demographics from EHRs to public health surveillance systems, such as a Healthy Weight Surveillance System. The height and weight report profile is not limited to data defined in this guide and intends to set a minimum for local implementations and future development of the height and weight report profile.

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH) funding created significant incentives for healthcare practitioners to purchase and meaningfully use EHRs in the collection of patient demographic and clinical information and transfer that clinical data to public health surveillance systems. HITECH provides the opportunity for state and federal public health agencies to benefit from the height and weight data from EHRs, which can provide nearly census-level measured healthy weight surveillance data at very low cost. Quality EHR data allows for improved patient care, surveillance and evaluation, and quality improvement. The first step in establishing these processes is to create a standard for reporting height and weight data via EHRs.
