Today in Area Studies we celebrated the publication of the 40th volume of Muqarnas in our Leiden office, as well as the work of our dear colleague, Production Editor Gera van Bedaf, who has been responsible for the management of the typesetting of the past 20 Muqarnas volumes for two decades. Volume 40 is her last volume. My colleague Pieter te Velde, a well known name for our authors in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, will succeed her as Production Editor and Project Manager as from volume 41. Thanks so much Gera for your dedication and hard work on Muqarnas over the years 🙏🏻💫🌟! Due to the 'academic' price I do not expect many of you to buy it, but I would at least like to make everyone aware of my new book's existence (published as of last week with De Gruyter Brill). Undoubtedly it fills what for many decades has been a widely-accepted gap in the scholarly literature of the western world, a detailed study of the unknown Augustinian mythographer and chronologist Guillaume Bonjour (1670-1714). But fear not, sceptical reader, for there is also more (!), from flesh-eating Greek gods to fabled Egyptian kings, dictatorial biblical patriarchs, imprisoned papal legates, Christian missionaries disguised as samurai, flirting in Rotterdam, pedantic Florentine bibliophiles, enraged Chinese emperors, Dutch mayors going wild over ancient coins, and an Italian gentleman trapped for almost three days underground after falling into a crevasse in the Tomb of Caecilia Metella. Above all, it hopes to say something about how biblical scholars developed a new interest in, approach to, and fondness for the wonders (and evidence) of pagan antiquity around the dawn of the Enlightenment. A few weeks ago, we shared that the Dutch M&A community nominated the De Gruyter Brill merger for Best Dutch Mid-Cap Deal of the Year 2024, along with four other transactions.
