Meet Brian Hole – Chief Information Officer of Paradigm Publishing Services and Chief Executive Officer of ]u[ Ubiquity Passionate about publishing and technology, Brian has held key roles in both industries for over 15 years at renowned organizations like Elsevier and the British Library. He was inspired to explore open access publishing while pursuing his PhD, recognizing a need for accessibility in academic publishing. For Brian, the mission was clear: publish excellent content with no paywalls or subscriptions. This led him to found Ubiquity, and eventually, to join the Paradigm team. True to both Paradigm and Ubiquity's core values, his goal is to bring openness, innovation, and transparency to academic publishing by supporting small presses, whether they're closed, open, or mixed model, and for- or not-for-profit: "Ubiquity's services will always be 100% open, but combining them with those of our partners gives customers a massive amount of flexibility and support. I really believe that Paradigm will have a significant and very positive impact in the world of university presses and beyond." Join Brian and Paradigm in creating a fair, sustainable scholarly ecosystem. #ParadigmPublishingServices #DeGruyterBrill #DeGruyter #Sciendo #Ubiquity #AcademicPublishing #SmallPublishers #PublishingInnovation

Over the past few months, I’ve engaged with leaders from university presses and aggregators, and one message has stood out: syndicated usage reporting is essential—particularly for publishers relying on third-party aggregators to distribute eBooks to academic libraries worldwide. Usage reporting goes beyond counting downloads. It’s a critical tool that empowers small publishers with: - An informed, global eBook strategy - Business model management - Author insights - Academic library engagement - Benchmarking against competitors - And more... At the Charleston Conference earlier this month, Paradigm Publishing Services joined a meaningful conversation with leaders from EBSCO Information Services, Project MUSE, JSTOR, Clarivate, and Princeton University Press to address this issue. Together, we’re working on an initiative to standardize and enhance usage reporting across aggregators, creating a more transparent and collaborative ecosystem for publishers, authors, and libraries. I look forward to sharing our progress with our advisory board participants later this year. Transparency and collaboration are essential for publishers to compete on a level playing field, and it’s a testament to the shared commitment of support for university presses and small, independent publishers that competitors can come together to create solutions that benefit all stakeholders. #Transparency #ScholarlyPublishing #UniversityPresses #ParadigmPublishingServices

Last month, we hosted the Paradigm Stakeholder Meeting at the iconic National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, bringing together over 60 leaders in scholarly publishing. Together, we engaged in thoughtful discussion about how to make research more widely discoverable and accessible in the ever-evolving landscape of academic publishing. Our team left feeling inspired and ready to get to work! These were our top 5 takeaways: 1. Shrinking market share keeps all of us up at night. 2. Syndicated usage reporting from aggregators is critical for small presses. 3. Large commercial publishers are increasingly taking market share from small presses. 4. The system fails to recognize small publishers as essential. Collaboration is how we fix this. 5. Among presses, libraries, and aggregators, no one is an outsider. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this eye-opening event! #ScholarlyPublishing #PublishingInnovation #ParadigmPublishingServices #DeGruyterBrill #Philadelphia #NationalConstitutionCenter
