The #COP28 outcome is extremely weak and fails those most in need of urgent action and support. The headlines extol an “agreement” that is actually a mere exhortation: The Conference of the Parties “calls on” Parties to “contribute” to “transitioning away from fossil fuels.” This may have been decent language in 1992. But the climate change challenge has grown into a global emergency, with the natural system threatening self-amplifying warming that would be beyond our ability to control. The COP exists to take action, not for the Parties to call on the Parties to take action. The #UNFCCC has become a morass of specious verbiage. Eight years after the Paris Agreement, my assessment from that night still applies: “We’ve agreed to what we ought to be doing; but no one yet has agreed to go do it.” https://lnkd.in/e8iqfr8f Samoa, speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (#AOSIS), summarized the outcome bluntly and succinctly: “The process has failed us. The course correction that is needed has not been secured.” But Samoa wasn’t just speaking for AOSIS. They were speaking for all of us.

....meanwhile, entrepreneurs are waking up each day working on software, hardware, and business models that help industry and society adapt to our unfortunate new climate reality. Legislation and advocacy are important, but while well-intentioned discussions happen around the proverbial dining room table over coffee and desert, the more maverick amongst us are in the garage trying to figure out where/how we can leverage technology to 1) improve the efficacy of solutions that help businesses and communities in say, Samoa, survive the next 25 years, 2) bring down the cost of pragmatic solutions, and 3) distribute the proven solutions to communities of all sizes in all countries, including Samoa. Oh, and you can place the well-intentioned study on 'resilient communities' on the floor next to the door to the garage, will check it out later.

As frustrating as this all is - and for all the energy it takes for me not to wallow in despair on these (not even) half measures - thank you for your hard work Dennis. Your clients and all of us are fortunate to have you so focused on these issues.

A great summary of how many of us feel at this point. I know we need COP28, but until we see more aggressive action stemming from these meetings these will be just talks and nothing more.

All noble intentions, but zero commitments.
