High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution

Welcome to Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, Minister of Environment of Rwanda, as Co-Chair of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution alongside Minister of International Development of Norway Anne Beathe Tvinnereim. Dr. Valentine Uwamariya is the current Minister of Environment. Prior to this, she served as the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion in Rwanda. She also served as Minister of Education for three years and half. Before joining the Ministry of Education, she was the Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of trainings, Institutional development and Research at Rwanda Polytechnic (RP). She was responsible for providing science and technology based technical and vocational training which enable the beneficiaries to create jobs for personal development. She is passionate to promote research and technology and disseminate their findings to foster national development. Dr Valentine holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry from former National University of Rwanda (NUR). In 2005, she got her Msc degree in Chemistry from Witwatersrand University (Johannesburg-South Africa). In 2013, she obtained her PhD from UNESCO-IHE and Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) in Environmental engineering and Water technology. Dr Valentine has been involved in teaching/research for 19 years at University, and served as Dean of the School of Science at the College of Science and Technology (University of Rwanda). Besides being a senior lecturer and a researcher at UR, Dr Valentine has held other important responsibilities in the Rwandan Society and sat on Boards of local companies. "Fiji, along with other so-called high ambition nations, wants to see the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC) produce a treaty that will substantially reduce the production of unessential plastics, minimize plastic’s chemical load, and hold manufacturers responsible for the sustainable disposal of their products." Negotiators from over 60 HAC Member States met to discuss our call for binding provisions to restrain and reduce the production and consumption of primary plastic polymers to sustainable levels and on the way forward towards shared understanding and convergence at #INC5

The INC Secretariat just published the "Compilation of draft text of the international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment". The High Ambition Coalition calls for enhanced ministerial engagement and dialogue and encourage all countries to intensify their efforts to establish areas of shared understanding and convergence towards #INC5. On #WorldEnvironmentDay, the High Ambition Coalition reaffirms our common ambition to end plastic pollution by 2040 through an ambitious and effective #PlasticsTreaty that contributes to the restoration of degraded ecosystems, biodiversity and curbing climate change.
