Anyone can talk to kids about their art, but here are some helpful, open-ended questions to support their early learning and development in the process. 1️⃣ “Tell me about your art…” 2️⃣ “Where did you get your idea?” 3️⃣ “What is your favorite part?” Learn more about why these kinds of questions matter, AND how we bring promising practices in early childhood and museum education together in The cARTie Curriculum at www.cARTie.org. [Video Description: The text “3 Questions to Ask Children about their Art” is followed by three questions: “tell me about your art,” “where did you get your idea?,” and “what is your favorite part?” with a video of students working on a collaborative activity on the museum bus playing behind.]

I'm incredibly proud to have been part of the team developing and launching this new campaign by the Royal Academy of Arts highlighting the crisis of art education and championing the value of art in our schools. Art education isn't just about becoming an artist. It teaches children to think flexibly, ask questions and think critically. It wakes up imaginations and builds confidence. It encourages children to see the world differently and to make their mark. The value of art in our schools is immeasurable and currently art education is in crisis. Art is a serious subject and we urgently need to bring it back! https://lnkd.in/ehjDVJKi

In 2021, the government cut funding by 50% to subjects it identified as low-priority / high-cost: - Performing Arts - Creative Arts - Media Studies. This is despite the majority of the British public across the political spectrum opposing the cuts. Three years on, the effects are plain to see, profoundly impacting arts education, arts access and the creative industries. https://lnkd.in/e7jzriVB

Please join us in thanking the U.S. Department of Education (ED) for releasing a “Dear Colleague” letter today to state education agencies clarifying the use of federal funds for arts education under Titles I, II, III, IV-A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Carl. D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This is the first time ED has released such guidance since 2013, which was two years before ESSA passed shifting language from core academic subjects to a well-rounded education including music and the arts. The release of new guidance marks a monumental win for arts education programs and is the culmination of years of work from arts education advocates. With the release of ED’s new guidance, arts educators across the country will no longer have to wonder if/how federal funds can be used to support their programs. The release of this guidance marks an inflection point for arts education, officially recognized as part of a well-rounded education in 2015, and now receiving comprehensive guidance on how federal funds can support its programming. From the perspective of Reggio Emilia educators, the atelier is place of research for both children and teachers. It is a space in which children encounter interesting and attractive contexts, materials and techniques that enable them to explore and express their ideas and theories through the language of visual arts. It is also a space in which educators gain insights into children’s motivations, meaning making, and learning. Read my post to learn more. https://smpl.is/9o4q2

What occurred in Florida should serve as a wake-up call. We must redefine the art's impact and how we measure that impact. Just gonna keep on highlighting this issue… it’s not going away. The impact is now hitting education - FE particularly very hard indeed.Senior management play a numbers game and it’s all about money not success of our young creatives. Low numbers and they will and are closing courses. Once closed these provisions rarely start up again. The outcome? FE will become creative wastelands. The industry will not be able to recruit the new generation. Industry.. this is happening now. It’s time to wake up. Be woke. Protect our industry’s future.
Artist David Shrigley has installed a giant preying mantis at his former school to raise awareness about the importance of art in education. Access to arts subjects is vital to a balanced and enriched education, yet enrolment to these subjects at GCSE has decreased by 47% since 2010. It's high time to address the state of arts education! Quoted in The Guardian.

Wow. This is, at the same time, a brilliant statement about an essential issue and totally depressing and boring that we are even still debating the matter. Art is vital. Our culture is what makes us human. The short-sightedness of cutting arts funding anywhere, but ESPECIALLY in education is mind-blowingly stupid. Want a happy population, constructive society and thriving economy? Throw money at culture. Want a sad, stale, stagnant situation? Cut arts education. Read my recent articles for Sceptical Scot (which cite the excellent work by Campaign for the Arts) for my proposed solution. Cutting arts funding is like a business facing financial difficulty cutting marketing spend, stupid. Local, national and federal governments take note: sort this out now or watch our future spiral down the drain.
