The first baby girl to be welcomed into the world in one of Merseyside's hospitals on Christmas Day this year was five days early and born in the early hours. Parents Amy Whittaker and Matt Wilson from Walton were unable to keep the smiles off their faces as they posed for photos with the most recent addition to their family, baby Elsie.

Elsie was born at 1am today, December 25, at Liverpool Women's Hospital. Elsie weighed 6lbs 1oz. Speaking to the ECHO at the hospital on Christmas Day, Amy said: "It’s mad having her on Christmas. I did have plans for Christmas but oh no, I’m happy now though.

“She’s dead peaceful and content.” One midwife at Liverpool Women's Hospital spent her Christmas Eve crocheting little Christmas hats for the newborn babies, with Elsie being one of the lucky recipients.

Midwifes welcomed another little face into the world on Christmas Day at the hospital, but those working at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead didn't have any new arrivals when the ECHO visited this afternoon.

Another new arrival on Merseyside was Ameer Aliyar Bin Musawar Janjua, who was born at Liverpool Women's Hospital at 1.32am, weighing 6lb 8oz.
