Hungary almost produced the upset of Euro 2020 so far as they held world champions France to a draw in a big shock in Group F.

A capacity crowd were present at the Ferenc Puskas Arena and were not disappointed as Attila Fiola's goal on the stroke of half-time, followed by some diligent defending, ensured the hosts picked up their first point of the tournament.

Euro 2020 favourites France were expected to breeze through the opposition, but were instead frustrated having dominated the match for large periods but failed to make their chances count.

Antoine Griezmann missed a glorious opportunity at 0-0 to give his side the lead after Hungary keeper Peter Gulacsi had palmed Karim Benzema's shot into his path, following great work from Kylian Mbappe.

It only needed an accurate finish with half the goal gaping, but Griezmann went for power over precision and smashed the rebound straight at Gulacsi, who in fairness had been quick to his feet to cover the ground.

Mbappe was a thorn in Hungary's side all afternoon and almost broke the deadlock himself, meeting Lucas Digne's whipped cross with a header that went marginally past the far post.

He then teed up Benzema for another chance with a deft back-heeled flick, only for his strike partner to volley wide.

Then, as the clock ticked down on the first half and against the run of play, Hungary took a surprise lead.

France showed few defensive frailties in their opener against Germany, but Benjamin Pavard and Raphael Varane were found wanting as Hungary carved them open with ease down the left flank.

Attila Fiola played a neat one-two round Pavard as Varane got sucked in to try and nick the ball from Roland Sallai.

But the centre-back got nowhere near him, as Sallai knocked the ball into space for Fiola to run onto and bear down on goal.

Varane tried in vain to get back to defend but was the wrong side of Hungary's attacker, who slotted the ball past Hugo Lloris to give his side the lead.

Fiola then steamed off into the crowd to celebrate as France boss Didier Deschamps smashed the seat next to him in frustration.

Staring in the face of an upset, France emerged for the second half with renewed vigour as Ousmane Dembele came close to levelling the scoring just before the hour.

The winger cut in from the right and lashed a fierce shot at goal, which cannoned off the upright after the faintest of touches from Gulacsi.

Impatience began to creep into France's play as they searched desperately for an equaliser, but eventually Griezmann made amends.

A long ball over the top found Mbappe, who jinked past his man to cross low across the six-yard box, as a touch from a Hungary defender could only divert it into the path of the onrushing Griezmann to finish this time with aplomb.

Hungary defender in numbers as France searched in vain for a winner, as Gulacsi stood tall to deny Mbappe's close-range shot, before getting down to hold Corentin Tolisso's effort from distance moments later and earn his side the draw.

All eyes will now be on Portugal's meeting with Germany as the 'Group of Death' heats up.

It took Portugal 84 minutes to find a way past Hungary, and on this display you would fancy the minnows to give Germany a challenge with a place in the next round at stake.

France were expected to top the group, but will face Portugal in a tasty showdown which could have serious ramifications for England depending how they finish up in Group D.
