Wayne Rooney's managerial style has been hailed by one of his ex-players as he closes in on a return to the dugout.

The Manchester United and England legend, who has had a varied managerial career, including a commendable stint at Derby County during their financial crisis and a less impressive spell at DC United in the MLS, is in the frame for the vacant manager's job at Plymouth Argyle.

The Championship side, who narrowly avoided relegated last season, have reportedly approached Rooney for an interview. The approach is said to have been instigated by Plymouth's director of football, Neil Dewsnip, who formerly headed Everton's academy during Rooney's time at his boyhood club.

The approach hasn't gone down well with all Plymouth fans, who are concerned by his disastrous spell in charge of Birmingham City last season. After nine defeats in 15 games, he was sacked by the Blues, who were subsequently relegated to League One.

Despite that, Millwall midfielder George Evans, who played under Rooney at Derby, has nothing but praise for the former forward, praising his excellent communication skills. Speaking to News at Den, Evans said: "He's fantastic. He was in full communication with me when all of this [Derby's financial troubles] was going on, he was fully supportive.

"He told me my game time might be a bit limited. When he came in he got a few good results and I started playing as well.

"I've got nothing but good words to say about him and I think he's going to be a great manager. He's had the best career, we watched him as kids growing up and who better to learn from?

"In terms of man-management he's a great guy. He'll tell you what you're doing well, what you need to improve on."
