TV star Steve Pemberton returns to our screens as he gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look into TV hit show Inside No. 9.
Inside No. 9: The Party's Over sees long-time collaborators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith reunite to discuss the anthology series and its many iconic moments over the past decade.
Inside No. 9 presented viewers with a different, self-contained story in each of its 30-minute episodes and ended with a dark or shocking twist.
Inside No. 9: The Party's Over will air on BBC Two and iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday (December 22). When Steve Pemberton isn't working, he is usually with his family or supporting his beloved Blackburn Rovers.
But what else do we know about the man behind the series, Steve Pemberton?
Early life and career of Steve Pemberton
Steve grew up in Chorley, Lancashire and later met actors and future collaborators Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith at Bretton Hall College of Education.
The BAFTA winning actor and writer soon spent time producing and starring in small-scale theatre productions in London after graduating. Steve also worked part-time for Variety as assistant editor of the International Film Guide.
The trio then teamed up with Jeremy Dyson to form the League of Gentlemen comedy troupe in 1995 and went on tour throughout the 1990s.
In 1996, Steve and his college friends Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson went to the Edinburgh festival with their comedy show The League of Gentlemen. It was here the award winning actor and his troupe bagged himself the coveted Perrier Comedy prize a year later.
Their prize-winning stint in Scotland catapulted the trio to stardom and the show was adapted into a radio series, four BBC TV series, three live touring stage shows as well as a film. The dark comedy stylings of the League of Gentlemen remain a cult favourite to this day and the concept has won the trio a legion of adoring fans.
Years later, Steve and Reece would team-up again to write and star in the multi-award winning black comedy Psychoville which ran for two series and a Halloween special.
Eventually in 2014, Steve bagged the BAFTA award for his role acclaimed anthology show Inside No 9, a series broadcast on the BBC which he co-wrote again with Reece Shearsmith. He was awarded with a BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance in 2019.
Steve also appeared as meek accountant and twisted criminal Kevin Weatherill in Happy Valley, Mick Garvey in Benidorm, Midsomer Murders, Killing Eve, Death in Paradise and Taskmaster.
Heart attack aged just 25 sparked huge lifestyle changes
When Steve Pemberton was a young actor working in a theatre company in Germany, the then 25-year-old suddenly started to feel unwell. He was told by doctors that he had had a myocardial infarction, another term for a heart attack.
Steve has more important reasons for staying in shape and explained: "As you get older the things that really scare you are the thoughts of anything bad happening to your family... and your own mortality.
"I didn’t feel well so they took me to hospital. I had tests and the doctor told me very seriously ‘I cannot tell you there is nothing wrong with your heart’.
"Once I’d worked out the double negative and realised what he meant it was very frightening.
"I was told I’d had a myocardial infarction, a heart attack. When I got back to the UK and had other tests they couldn’t find any trace of it so I still don’t really know what happened"
He added: "But I’m aware of what happened to me and have regular check-ups. I lost two stone last year by dieting and taking up jogging.
"I was writing episodes of Benidorm and was finally able to manage my time to fit in the exercise."
