Ruth Jones, the creator of Gavin and Stacey and actress behind iconic character Nessa, has revealed she spotted a "glaring continuity error" in the show's iconic 2019 Christmas special. As fans of the hit BBC sitcom laughed and cried through the much-anticipated Christmas Day finale this year (spoilers are ahead), we finally saw Smithy (Ruth's co-creator James Corden) and Nessa make it official.
It was the moment fans had been waited for, since being left on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger back in 2019 when Nessa got down on one knee for Smithy. The episode was a total smash, with an eye-watering 18.49 million viewers glued to their screens. However, chatting on Magic Radio recently, Ruth admits she has spotted an error in the penultimate episode - and it’s all about Pam’s Christmas puddings. With a trip down memory lane, Ruth said: "I watched the 2019 Christmas special the other night and I noticed a glaring continuity error."
"You know Pam leaves the Christmas puddings behind and forgets to take them because they have been otherwise occupied and they are mortified? " and went on, "And Mick, being the calming force of the family, the voice of reason, says 'it's okay, we can go to a shop, there'll be one open'. So they go to get them on the way to the pub. Then Bryn turns up and he's got the Morrisons bag with the Christmas puddings in, and I think there were nine of them for dinner.
She continued: "Then Jason arrives and he's stopped at the shop and he's picked up Christmas puddings as well. So the next morning, when they haven't got the Christmas puddings, one of them, and I can't remember who it is, says 'have we left nine Christmas puddings in the pub?' There's 18, there's double.", reports the Daily Star.
However, James Corden disputed Ruth's observation, saying: "Does Bryn say that they have bought nine? No."
"Nobody says how many they've bought, and also, you don't have a Christmas pudding each on Christmas Day. What I thought that happened is they'd bought four or five and then Jason turned up and bought four."
Ruth argued the puddings were individual desserts, but James countered that the bag looked too heavy for those.
This year's Gavin and Stacey festive episode drew 12.3 million viewers, making it 2024's most-watched non-sporting event, with the total audience expected to rise once BBC iPlayer views are accounted for.
