Google is testing its Andromeda Chrome OS/Android hybrid on the HTC-made Nexus 9

Google has new hardware to debut at its October 4th event, but as we’ve learned recently the most important part of the event may not lie in hardware, but in software. We now know that Google’s long-rumored Android/Chrome OS hybrid operating system is internally called “Andromeda,” but we’ve been doing some digging of our own over the last couple of days to see if we could learn more.

We don’t know if it will ever formally come to the almost two-year-old tablet, but we’ve heard that Google is testing the yet-to-be announced hybrid OS on the HTC-made Nexus 9…

Amidst delays, Google confirms that Nougat for the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE will be available ‘in the coming weeks’

It’s been a few weeks since Google made Nougat official, and in the time since the company hasn’t pushed the update to all Nexus devices. It took until last week for the Nexus 6P’s OTA to fully roll out, and we’re still waiting on updates for the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE. Now the company has confirmed: we’re going to have to keep waiting…

Marshmallow-based Remix OS 3.0 ROM now available for the Nexus 9 and Pixel C

Multi-tasking on Android has never been great and while it is getting some major improvements with Android Nougat, it still can’t beat a standard desktop OS. The goal of Jide’s Remix OS has always been to create an OS based on Android that does multi-tasking well, and after releasing the latest version last week, Remix OS 3.0 is now available for Google’s most recent tablets.

RIP: Nexus 9 dies a silent death as it disappears from the Google Store

There’s a reason that I suggested the iPad Air 2 as the “Android tablet” to buy last holiday season. The HTC-made Nexus 9, which was the successor to the much-more-successful Nexus 7 series, just wasn’t a great tablet. We thought it was probably the best way to get pure Android in tablet form when it launched, but consumers never loved it, I never loved it, and tablets as a whole have become less and less useful for the general population as smartphones have gotten bigger.

Now, the Nexus 9 has finally died a silent death in its disappearance from the Google Store…

After over two years, Google quietly ends the Google Play for Education program

CRN reported over the weekend that Google is quietly shuttering its Google Play for Education program, and now we have confirmation of the plans via a statement made to TechCrunch. According to this statement, Google will no longer be selling Google Play for Education licenses effective March 31st of this year. That said, existing customers should not be seeing an interruption of services…

Google Store discounts see $200 price cut on Nexus 9, $80 off Nexus 5X [Amazon too]

Update: B&H also has the Nexus 5X at $80 off across the board.

Update: Looks like Amazon is upping the competition. The online retailer has price-matched the Google Store, and you can now pick up the 16GB Nexus 5X for $299 in black or white.  Sadly, the 32GB version is back-ordered, but the price is still listed at $349, the same as Google’s discounted price.

While you could pick up last year’s Nexus 6 64GB at a ridiculously low price ($260) on Amazon earlier today, Google’s official online store has some discounts of its own to offer for Black Friday. Perhaps most attractive is the $80 price cut on one of this year’s newest Nexus phones.

You can now buy the 32GB Nexus 5X for just $349 (down from $429), while the 16GB version is $299. At time of writing, all color options are in stock, but the discount only applies while inventory is there.  While it’s not the biggest discount we’ve ever seen, it’s still very generous given how new the Nexus 5X is. Google only announced the product last month, and it’s one of the only available phones to support Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

While stocks last, you can also snag the Nexus 9 at a discount. The tablet is down to just $199 for the 16GB version and $279 for the 32GB model, cutting the price down by a hefty $200. As things stand (at least until the Pixel C is available), the Nexus 9 is currently one of the only tablets available offering a pure Android experience. Multiple manufacturers have Android tablets on the market, but most come with a boat-load of bloatware. For $199 I’d argue you can’t get a better Android tablet if you value performance and software purity.

If you’re curious to see what other deals are out there today, be sure to bookmark 9to5Toys’ Black Friday page and 9to5Mac’s Black Friday Gameplan.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow gets a release date: Rollout starts next week for Nexus 5, 6, 7 (2013) and Nexus 9

At its event in San Francisco today, Google confirmed that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be rollout out to users from next week, just as previously rumored. The update isn’t as big a design refresh as Lollipop, but brings with it a host of new features which help speed things up, and give you better battery life with ‘Doze mode’ and enhanced security.

Google announces rewards program for finding Android bugs in Nexus devices, pays up to $8k

Site default logo image

Google has announced Android Security Rewards, a program to reward security researchers and others who find (and optionally fix) vulnerabilities in the latest available Android versions for current Nexus devices. At present, this means the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

We’re launching Android Security Rewards to help reward the contributions of security researchers who invest their time and effort in helping us make Android more secure. Through this program we provide monetary rewards and public recognition for vulnerabilities disclosed to the Android Security Team. The reward level is based on the bug severity and increases for higher quality reports that include reproduction code, test cases, and patches.

Rewards range from $333 for a test case of a low-severity bug up to $8,000 for a “well-written CTS test and patch” for a critical bug …

HTC ‘H7’ low-end tablet teased for release by next month

Google’s HTC-made Nexus 9 tablet

HTC appears to have a new tablet on the horizon as often reliable leaker @upleaks claims a new tablet called “HTC H7” is currently planned for a Q2 release. That means that, if accurate, we should see the tablet introduced by the end of next month in order to meet the currently planned second quarter timeframe for release.

Some Nexus 9 users reporting that recent 5.0.2 update bricked their devices

Following our report last month that the Android Lollipop 5.0.2 update was causing Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 devices to become bricked, it now appears as if the Nexus 9—which just received the update earlier this week—is suffering the same problem. While not all Nexus 9 devices that go through with the 5.0.2 update are being killed, threads on Google’s Product Forum suggest that this is definitely not an uncommon issue by any means…

Google is rolling out Android 5.1 to the Nexus 9 starting today

Google has announced today that it is beginning its rollout of Android 5.1 to the Nexus 9 at some point today. It has been a long time coming for the Nexus 9, with the flagship Google tablet just earlier this week receiving its update to 5.0.2—which first hit the Nexus 7 in December of 2014. Now, finally, it looks like Android 5.1 (more specifically Android 5.1.1) will be coming to the Nexus 9 very, very soon.

Googler says Android 5.1.1 OTA updates for Nexus 9 ‘aren’t far out’

Site default logo image

Android 5.1.1 was first released for the Nexus Player more than a week ago, and just yesterday the update finally reached the the Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013 WiFi models) and the Nexus 10. But one device, the flagship Nexus 9 tablet, still hasn’t even received plain-old Android 5.1—which first started rolling out in early March. Now, a Google employee has come out on Google+ to say that 5.1.1 for the “N9 OTAs aren’t far out.”

Google says it has seen a ‘decline in Nexus’ during recent months

Site default logo image

During the company’s earnings call for the first quarter of 2015, Google CFO Patrick Pichette made a comment concerning its “other revenues” stream. The “other revenues” category consists of revenues from the Play Store and now Google Store, and it’s one of the company’s smallest sources of money. But Pichette noted that while revenue from “other revenues” was up 23 percent year-over-year to $1.8 billion, revenue was down 3 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2014.

Deal Alert: Google Nexus 9 16GB WiFi (white) $320 shipped (Reg. $400)

From 9to5Toys.com:

Office Depot is currently offering up the Nexus 9 for $319.99, coming in at an $80 discount from the retail $400 price tag. This device is HTC-made, and Google sells it from the Play Store for $399 in two colors (or 3 colors for the 32 GB variant). This deal is only for the white 16 GB model, but Office Depot is also listing deals for other models as well. The black 16 GB model is available for $349.99, and both the black and white 32 GB models are available for $429.99 (Reg. $479.99).

It’s not often that we such great deals for current-generation Nexus devices, so if this interests you, you might want to act quick. All four models (including the cheapest one) are still in stock at the time of this writing, and they all ship for free in 3-5 days. It’s also worth noting that Office Depot is also offering a 20% off any single item promotion on its website, which could get you some decent deals on other Google-y gear. This coupon can’t be combo’d with this item, however, as it is already discounted.

If you aren’t quite sure if the Nexus 9 is for you, be sure to check out our review of the device to see how Google’s latest tablet from HTC stacks up against the competition.

You can now install CyanogenMod 12 on the Nexus 9

If you’ve been waiting for CyanogenMod 12 to hit the Nexus 9, you’re in luck. A nightlies release from earlier today packs support for “flounder” (the code name for the Nexus 9), and you can download it right now. This news comes following the announcement in early January that Cyanogen had enabled nightly releases for the latest version of its ROM.

As you know, CyanogenMod 12 (unlike CyanogenMod 11) is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop, so you’ll still get Material Design and the other benefits of Google’s latest official release with this build. That said, it’s worth remembering that this is a very early version of the software, so if you go ahead and flash it, don’t expect it to run perfectly (this can be said about basically any build of CM 12 currently).
