We are thrilled to announce that AGSI was selected to be on the Steering Committee of the Emirates Green Building Council EmiratesGBC Women's Network . Representing women in the steel and building industry, AGSI’s appointment highlights our commitment to championing gender equity, driving sustainability and fostering leadership and mentorship opportunities in these sectors, and beyond. The steel industry has historically been male dominated, but AGSI is at the forefront of redefining that narrative. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, out of 10 million employees working in the construction sector, just 9% are women. In the UAE, women’s participation in the labour force has increased from 29.2% in 1990 to 40.6% in 2018, but there is still a long way to go, especially within the field of green buildings and steel industries. Represented by AGSI’s CSO Anna Griffin, we bring a unique perspective, emphasizing the importance of inclusive leadership in achieving sustainability and climate goals. Our involvement underscores our mission to advocate for gender diversity and create platforms where women leaders can drive meaningful change in traditionally industrial sectors. Women encounter many barriers when deciding to enter male-dominated fields, however, a lack of ambition is not one of these barriers, as the UAE Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in the Workplace Survey found that 74% of women, compared to 66% of men, have the ambition to set their sights on a top executive role. The EGBC Women’s Network aims to empower women as leaders in the sustainable construction sector while advancing gender diversity across industries. AGSI shares this vision and believes that diverse perspectives and inclusive leadership are essential to addressing the challenges of climate change and resource efficiency. Through its role on the Steering Committee, AGSI will collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers to: - Promote sustainable practices and green building materials in construction. - Inspire and support women to take on leadership roles in sustainability-focused industries. - Champion initiatives that align with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative as well as the United Nations Global Compact SDG 5. We are honored to join the EGBC Women’s Network and contributing to the advancement of sustainability, gender equity, and inclusive growth. By combining its expertise in sustainability with a strong commitment to mentorship and gender diversity, AGSI aims to pave the way for a more equitable and environmentally responsible future in the steel and construction industries. AGSI, the world’s first carbon-neutral steel plant based in Abu Dhabi, proudly participated in the Annual General Meeting of the Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC), reinforcing its commitment to advancing sustainability in the built environment. Represented by our Chief Sustainability Officer Anna Griffin, we played a critical role in driving discussions with our colleagues. The event brought together key stakeholders from across the construction and sustainability sectors to discuss innovative strategies and actionable steps to accelerate decarbonization efforts in the region. As the leader and pioneer in the sustainable steelmaking and net zero steel products, we recognize the sustainable building materials hold significant potential to reduce environmental impact, drive economic growth, and promote social well-being. The buildings and construction sector are responsible for ~40% of global energy-related carbon emissions and 50% of all extracted materials. It is estimated that between 2020 and 2050, new projects will generate half of their emissions from embodied sources, such as concrete and steel, and half from the energy used in operation. Two-thirds of people will live in cities by 2060, and half of the urban fabric to accommodate them is not yet built. It is critical that the built environment addresses both operational and embodied emissions, taking a whole-life carbon approach to accelerate the decarbonization of the sector and align with the climate goals of 1.5. In the UAE, the building sector was responsible for 27% of CO2 emissions as of 2019. At the same time, the built environment represents an opportunity for emissions reductions of 56% by 2030, making it a critical sector for the UAE to meet its net zero targets for 2050 under the Paris Agreement. And 81% of total emissions target set by the UAE by 2030 will come from the building sector. During the meeting, we emphasized the critical role the built environment plays in addressing climate change. Buildings and infrastructure contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, underscoring the urgent need for transformative solutions. The demand for sustainable construction practices, particularly the use of green building materials, is central to reducing the sector’s environmental footprint. The Emirates Green Building Council’s Annual General Meeting served as a platform to align on shared objectives and innovative solutions for decarbonizing the construction industry. AGSI remains committed to leading by example, providing Net Zero Steel as a viable, scalable solution for the built environment’s sustainability challenges. We had a pleasure to moderate one of the important panels during the Big 5 Global Talks in Dubai, titled "Improving Awareness and Driving Stakeholder Engagement for Sustainable Building Materials". The panel was moderated by our CPO and Head of ESG Anna Griffin and address important questions such as "What strategies can we employ to fast-track the adoption of green products for building more sustainable cities and accelerating decarbonization of the industry?", amongst others. The esteemed panelists, Amruta Kshemkalyani Khaled El Dokani Dr. Jacinta Dsilva Wesley Thomson, delved deep into the challenges and opportunities surrounding sustainable building materials and their critical role in shaping a greener future. From enhancing awareness among stakeholders to navigating policies and addressing barriers to adoption, the conversation highlighted actionable strategies to accelerate the transition to a sustainable built environment across the MENA Region. The industry leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility. As the Net Zero Steel, Arabian Gulf Steel Industries - AGSI is at the forefront of decarbonization in the industry and an example of green materials that can revolutionize the construction industry while contributing significantly to global climate goals. We have to remember that the buildings and construction sectors are responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Of those total emissions, building operations are responsible for 27% annually, while building and infrastructure materials and construction (typically referred to as embodied carbon) are responsible for an additional 13% emissions annually. Just three materials – concrete, steel, and aluminum – are responsible for 23% of total global emissions (most of this used in the built environment). There is incredible opportunity for carbon reduction in these high-impact materials through policy, design, material selection, and specification. However, in the MENA Region, despite advancements in technology and the increasing availability of green alternatives, barriers such as lack of awareness, fragmented stakeholder engagement, and insufficient policy frameworks continue to hinder widespread adoption. It is therefore imperative that we accelerate the adoption of green products to enable an offtake of more projects that offer more sustainable solutions. Grateful to have been part of such a dynamic and solution-oriented dialogue!
