As a dedicated wellness travel concierge, I'm constantly reminded of the impact honesty has on fostering genuine connections with my clients. In an industry where trust is paramount, authenticity reigns. A client once eagerly sought my guidance on a destination I hadn’t yet explored. In the past, the temptation to embellish or promise more than I could deliver might have clouded my judgment. However, by being honest and letting my client know that my recommendations were purely research based, I had eliminated the room for doubt and had lowered their expectations. The results are phenomenal. My client got back to me amazed at how good the recommendations had ended up being. This meant that I ended up with a loyal client who knew they could rely on me at all costs. Honesty is the cornerstone of exceptional customer service. Instead of overpromising and potentially setting unrealistic expectations, at Complementation, we embrace transparency. We acknowledge the limits of our expertise but we commit to diligent research by going above and beyond to source the best. By admitting when I don't have all the answers, I build trust with my clients, reassuring them that their best interests are my priority. In today's fast-paced world, authenticity is a rare gem. As a concierge in the growing wellness and travel management industry, I've come to realise that our role extends far beyond simply making reservations or arranging itineraries. It's about mastering the art of negotiation, where every interaction becomes an opportunity to create seamless experiences for our clients. Whether in getting exactly what a client asks for or being able to go above and beyond in order to exceed expectations, it is through negotiation that anything becomes possible. In his book "Never Split the Difference," former FBI negotiator Chris Voss unveils a treasure trove of techniques that are not only applicable in high-stakes hostage situations but also in the everyday negotiations we encounter as concierges. Here are my favourites: 1. Mirroring: A technique where we subtly mimic the language and demeanor of our clients to build rapport. As concierges, understanding and reflecting our clients' desires and concerns enables us to establish trust and guide negotiations toward mutually beneficial outcomes. 2. Labeling: By labeling emotions and concerns, we acknowledge and validate our clients' feelings, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. This technique allows us to delve deeper into their needs, ensuring that our solutions are tailored precisely to their preferences. 3. Tactical Empathy: It is crucial to understand the perspective of the other party. As concierges, practicing tactical empathy enables us to anticipate our clients' needs, preemptively addressing any potential obstacles and crafting solutions that exceed their expectations. 4. Calibrated Questions: Strategic questioning lies at the heart of effective negotiation. By asking calibrated questions that encourage elaboration and reveal underlying motivations, we gain invaluable insights into our clients' preferences, enabling us to customize experiences that resonate with their aspirations. Mastering these negotiation techniques not only enhances our ability to fulfill our clients' desires by elevating the overall quality of service we provide as concierges. Applying the principles outlined in "Never Split the Difference," makes us ambassadors of continuous improvement, refining our craft to deliver unparalleled experiences. I was asked on an interview whether I ‘felt’ as a concierge at heart. I remembered them saying “You are either born a concierge or you are not”.
