🔎🌍 EU Carbon Tax is Already Reshaping the UAE’s Energy Mix The region's energy landscape is evolving toward low-emission projects, as highlighted in this S&P Global article, based on findings from our 'MENA Energy Outlook 2025' as well as exclusive interviews at the World Hydrogen MENA Congress. The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is influencing industry and energy strategies in the UAE, even before its full implementation in 2026. ✅ CBAM regulation taxes carbon-intensive imports: it applies to cement, iron & steel, aluminum, fertilizer, electricity, and hydrogen exports to the EU. ✅ Reducing energy intensity in steel & aluminum is a key UAE focus: CBAM compliance has already impacted the country’s energy mix, with 25% of its electricity now sourced from clean energy. ✅ Legislation has its skeptics: the EU is the GCC’s second-largest trade partner, accounting for 11.1% of total trade in 2023. Ongoing discussions aim to clarify certification requirements for CBAM compliance. However, some industry leaders remain skeptical, suggesting that the EU should reconsider CBAM’s scope and timeline, as its impact on certain industries could be severe. ✅ Green energy’s role is expanding: according to our latest report, 'MENA Energy Outlook 2025' by Dii Desert Energy, the UAE currently has 34 operational renewable energy projects and is actively scaling up its renewable energy capacity. Eight new projects are under construction or in development, with three additional projects under signed MOUs. Key findings from the report include: 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 (𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻): ☀️ Installed capacity of solar PV and wind doubled from 15 GW to 30 GW over past 5 years with an additional expected 20 GW of new RE capacity per year by 2030 in conservative scenario and over 40 GW per year in a green revolution scenario. ☀️ Large-scale Projects: GW-scale single projects have become the norm for PV. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻: ⬆️ Projects Growth: 117 projects announced as of end 2024 (vs. 67 at end 2023). 🌍 Almost all MENA countries have published ambitious strategies and targets, total approx.10mtpa, that would require an equivalent solar&wind capacity of 400 GW 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺: 📈 Importance: Energy storage is becoming increasingly important, with significant developments in battery energy storage systems (BESS) announced in recent months.
