𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 – 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗣𝗠 𝘄𝗮𝘆! At KPM, we take pride in delivering structurally efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions that align seamlessly with architectural vision and project goals. In one of our recent mixed-use developments in Riyadh, KSA, we implemented a high-performance structural design that optimizes space utilization, reduces material use, and enhances sustainability. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: ✅ 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗯 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 – Designed to accommodate long column-free spans and cantilevers up to 5m, providing maximum flexibility for interior spaces while reducing structural weight. This solution enhances efficiency, improves aesthetics, and optimizes material usage. ✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 & 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 – By carefully distributing structural cores and using strategically placed gravity columns, we achieved superior lateral stability, minimized structural loads, and maximized carpet area, offering both economic and functional advantages. ✅ 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 – Instead of traditional shoring systems, we leveraged geotechnical assessments to adopt slope excavation, avoiding unnecessary structural reinforcements. This approach significantly reduced construction costs and time while ensuring stability and safety. ✅ 𝗕𝗜𝗠-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – Our Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach enabled seamless coordination across multiple disciplines, ensuring a clash-free, optimized design that streamlined the construction process. This methodology helped maintain efficiency, improve decision-making, and enhance project delivery timelines. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Every project presents unique challenges, and this development was no exception. The presence of soil cavities required detailed soil analysis and innovative foundation solutions to enhance stability and load-bearing capacity. Our team implemented advanced soil stabilization techniques and rigorous structural assessments to ensure long-term durability and safety. Through smart engineering, strategic planning, and sustainable practices, we continue to shape the urban landscape, delivering resilient, high-performance structures that stand the test of time. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Building services engineers have traditionally focused on reducing operational carbon through broader mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) strategies. However, the whole-life carbon impact of MEP systems extends far beyond operational carbon alone. MEP equipment represents both embodied carbon impact when a building is first constructed and significant repeated carbon impacts through a building lifetime. Unlike embodied carbon from structural design, which remains relatively stable after a building is constructed, the embodied carbon from MEP systems varies significantly throughout the building's lifespan. Although the initial contribution of MEP systems to embodied carbon is relatively small—approximately 6%—their cumulative impact over the building's lifecycle can exceed 40%. This is largely due to the frequent need for equipment replacements. For example, smaller fixtures generally last 5–10 years, while larger equipment, such as generators, typically have a lifespan of around 15-20 years. Key Considerations for Low-Carbon Building Service Design: • 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: Minimise MEP equipment demands with passive strategies like natural ventilation and high-performance façades. • 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘄-𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: Choose lightweight, durable materials with low carbon content, especially for metal-heavy MEP products. • 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲: Specify low-GWP refrigerants and perform regular leakage tests to limit carbon emissions. • 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿: Follow the CIBSE TM65 methodology for accurate embodied carbon calculations and ongoing monitoring. At KPM, we integrate these principles into a holistic approach, embedding 'whole life carbon' thinking across all design stages to create sustainable, future-ready buildings with minimal environmental impact.
