In a recent paper by Capricorn Investment Group, GP stakes in impact investing were shown to deliver both competitive financial returns and transformative societal impact. By channeling patient capital and strategic support to specialized asset managers, this approach unlocks a multiplier effect, driving rapid scale, catalyzing sustainable growth, and addressing critical global challenges like climate change and healthcare access. Investing in GP stakes not only enhances asset value but also serves as a powerful lever for systemic change, paving the way for a more sustainable future. It's great to see our Mobilizing Private Capital Equation articles (re)published by the Transition Investment Lab of New York University Abu Dhabi, with a whole new visual! Thank you Bernardo Bortolotti for making this possible. Robert W. van Zwieten, my co-founding partner in Route17, and I penned these articles about a year ago based on the insights from a Blended Finance Symposium we organized and that was hosted by Dimensional Fund Advisors in September 2023. The basic argument that we make in these articles is that in order to mobilize more private capital towards solving societal challenges, we need to turn four "dials": 1 The supply of bankable projects 2 The more effective use of de-risking tools 3 Public and private sector linkages 4 Orientation of private investors towards these kinds of investments It's nice to have these four articles now neatly in one place: https://lnkd.in/e72asjXx That said, if you'd like to go back to the originals, you can find them on illuminem: Part 1: https://lnkd.in/eXGDv6Cv Part 2: https://lnkd.in/eu_UmRye Part 3: https://lnkd.in/ehfHfHie Part 4: https://lnkd.in/e_VriWXH And as a reward for those who read this far: we'll have some exciting news to share shortly that is also related to these articles. Stay tuned... #blendedfinance #sdgs

What's in store for Africa? Best-selling author and journalist Christopher McDougall once wrote: “Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest Lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a Lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest Gazelle, or it will starve." But brute force won’t cut it anymore, writes author Sanjeev Gupta. In today’s multipolar world, one will need to be tactical and smart about it. After 3 decades plus of investing, transacting and strategising in Africa as Former Board member and Executive Director for Financial Services at Africa Finance Corporation, Sanjeev Gupta shares with TIL his perspective on the continent's growth potential, with both challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The Gulf's pivot to critical minerals isn't just smart - it's brilliant. These nations understand something crucial: whoever controls the critical mineral supply chain controls the future of clean tech. While others debate, they're building processing hubs, securing global mining rights, and creating integrated value chains. The genius? They're using their oil playbook (control supply + processing + distribution) but for the minerals essential to the green transition. #CriticalRawMaterials #EnergyTransition

The World Resources Institute has spotlighted climate finance as the most pivotal story to watch in 2025, emphasizing its role in shaping our global future. The article "Climate Finance Is a Top Story to Watch in 2025" from WRI provides an in-depth look at the current state of climate finance, the challenges, and the opportunities ahead. Key Insights: Mobilization of Funds: The need to mobilize $1.3 trillion for climate action in developing nations is not just a goal but a necessity. This finance must come through various channels, including bilateral donations, multilateral development banks, and leveraged private finance. Debt Concerns: A significant portion of climate finance currently comes in the form of loans, which can lead to debt distress in vulnerable nations. The call is clear for more concessional finance, grants, and low-cost loans to avoid this pitfall. Net-Zero Targets: With countries submitting new national climate plans in 2025, the focus is on ensuring these plans are ambitious and include clear investment strategies for both mitigation and adaptation. #ClimateFinance #SustainableFuture #2025Goals #WRI #EnvironmentalFinance Article Link: https://lnkd.in/dDZ299Yj

What is the Blue Economy and why is it becoming more and more strategically relevant? The cultural and economic history of the #UAE and the region is inextricably linked to its marine heritage and its marine ecosystem, write Joywin Mathew and Maja Kent in their piece for our latest Annual Report. "Oceans absorb 30% of global carbon dioxide emissions and act as an enormous heat sink for the planet, storing nearly 93% of all excess heat energy generated. For the region that is highly susceptible to #ClimateChange, this service seems particularly important." "The sustainable #BlueEconomy refers to all sectors of the economy which have a direct or indirect connection to the ocean and is based on circularity, collaboration, resilience, opportunity and inter-dependence." "Similar to the “New Deal” from the 1930’s, we are at a point in time where we have to enact a new “Blue Deal” – one which would unlock a wave of investments into this most critical of ecosystems and enable the cause of a just ocean transition." How are #SWFs navigating the polycrisis? What are the latest trends in their sustainable #investments? Has the current turmoil led sovereign wealth funds to focus on short-term domestic challenges, or are they staying committed to investing for long-term sustainability? TIL Executive Director Bernardo Bortolotti address Abhinav Mangat tackle these questions with data-driven insights, drawing on the latest figures from our 2024 Annual Report. "Sovereign wealth funds have a fiduciary duty to generate robust risk-adjusted returns on their investments. As universal investors, they also have the incentive and agency to address market failures and global externalities that could affect financial performance in the long run. Nonetheless, today, state ownership necessitates investors to consider policy issues in their strategies, which can limit the investable universe amid heightened geopolitical risk. Sovereign investing in these turbulent times thus requires a balancing act that combines vision and pragmatism."
