This year marked ZETA’s official kick-off, laying the foundation for creating markets for clean energy products across the MENA region and beyond, driven by several key milestones: ✨ Key Highlights of 2024 ✅ ZETA Roundtables: We brought together a growing audience of key stakeholders to discuss crucial topics, solidifying ZETA’s role as a thought leader in clean energy markets. Thanks to ENOWA, Frederic Barnaud, SEFE Marketing & Trading Ltd, Colin Crooks, ACT Group, and all involved. 👉 The first meeting of the Standardisation Working Group, co-hosted with DLA Piper, introduced a groundbreaking Sales & Purchase Agreement (SPA) template for renewable hydrogen and ammonia. Special thanks to Andreas Gunst Kenneth Wallace-Mueller 💡 Looking Ahead to 2025 Building on this momentum, ZETA is gearing up for an even more impactful year. With the establishment of two working groups: 👉 The Standardization Group develops essential templates and frameworks such as CBAM-compliant PPAs, hydrogen off-take agreements, carbon trading templates, and more. 👉 The Market Design Group focuses on developing primary and secondary carbon markets through international best practices. With a full agenda of meetings, roundtables, webinars, and publications, we’ll focus on market standardisation, knowledge sharing, and innovative clean energy solutions. Carbon: The New Trillion-Dollar Asset Class OilPrice.com explores how carbon is on track to become a trillion-dollar asset class by #2037, with countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Egypt leading the way by developing carbon trading infrastructure. In the piece, written by Alan Mammoser, ZETA CEO Jan Haizmann emphasizes the need for regional cooperation and mandatory carbon markets to drive meaningful emissions reductions. While voluntary markets are a step forward, they are best viewed as a precursor to future mandatory emissions trading schemes (#ETS). Last ZETA Roundtable of the Year! 🚀 Yesterday, we gathered at the Siemens Energy Innovation Center in Abu Dhabi for our final roundtable of 2024, where we explored the role of #technology in advancing sustainable trading practices. 🌍💡 The roundtable, titled "Harnessing Technology to Foster Sustainable Trading," brought together experts and key stakeholders for an insightful discussion. We explored initiatives like Kaspa Industrial Initiative and discussed how blockchain technology can foster a transparent, efficient, and inclusive marketplace. 🔗 Mohamad El Nahi presented the NGX (NextGreen) platform, explaining how it monitors real-time emissions and issues Environmental Attribute Certificates for projects of all sizes. He emphasized how small-scale green energy projects can benefit from revenue streams generated through carbon credits. Last week, we hosted an insightful seminar on the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), led by Dr. Jan Haizmann, CEO of ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance). 🌍 Deep Dive into the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): Insights for Egypt As the EU implements CBAM, the impact on Egyptian industries exporting to Europe is profound. With 20% OF EGYPTIAN EXPORTS TO THE EU ARE COVERED BY CBAM: • Bilateral traded between Egypt and EU is worth €37.2 billion ~ $39.2 billion. • Egypt is the 6th largest origin for goods imported into the EU covered by CBAM. • Some sectors such as aluminium are particularly exposed with 79% of exports going to the EU – in a sector such as this a tax or ETS highly desirable. • Aluminium and Cement present clear paths or action and inaction – whereas Iron & Steel and Fertilizer require delicate navigation. ✅ Key considerations for adaptation: • Establishing robust emissions reporting frameworks. • Enhancing carbon footprint transparency across supply chains. • Strengthening international collaboration for decarbonization efforts. • Supporting industries to comply without compromising competitiveness. 🌍⚡Last week at Egypt Energy Conference in Cairo, Jan Haizmann, CEO of ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance), delivered an insightful presentation, "Deep Dive: The European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM): What Egypt Needs to Know and How to Mitigate the Impact on Egyptian Industry." Jan broke down the upcoming EU tax regime, highlighting its potential effects as CBAM requirements take full effect in 2026. With Egypt's substantial trade ties to Europe—particularly in CBAM-regulated heavy goods like iron & steel, fertilizers, and aluminium—his message was both timely and significant. He emphasized that Egyptian industries will soon need to assess the carbon footprint of their products for export to Europe, stressing that “there is no option.” He shared the success story of the EU Emissions Trading System (#ETS), now valued at €1 trillion, which has cut #GHG emissions by over one-third in its 20-year history, a cornerstone of the EU's net-zero goal by 2050. He explained how the ETS and CBAM are designed to work in tandem to reduce emissions across a growing range of goods entering the EU. Highlighting the absence of a carbon pricing mechanism in #Egypt, Jan remarked that “it’s time to think about establishing this.” Jan outlined the likely impact on Egyptian products, the procedures for measuring and verifying carbon emissions, and how collaboration with importers will play a crucial role. He concluded by framing CBAM as an opportunity, explaining that while the #EU is exporting decarbonization policies, Egyptian industry can gain back its investment in decarbonization by pricing carbon and trading green certificates.
