There are very few things that get the cybersecurity industry pumped up. That short list includes great test results and leadership positions in various analyst matrices. More recently, the chief among these is perhaps tests of endpoint detection and response tools. These tools are among the most complex to build, properly tune, and integrate into real-world environments. That is why increasingly regular claims of 100% detection, lowest noise, or leader in protection ring so hollow. The factors that determine an EDR solution’s fitness are substantial, but chief among them should be: ● how well they integrate with their endpoint protection platform, ● ease of use, and ● costs to operate. Instead, there seems to be more and more noise. To suppress some of that noise, in a way similar to a well-balanced EDR platform, analyst house Forrester has shared guidance to both the industry and EDR buyers/operators concerning errant attempts to claim that some vendors have “won” the latest round of MITRE ATT&CK Evaluations Enterprise. Allie Mellen, Principal Analyst at Forrester, cautioned this week that: If a vendor says that it achieved 100% on the evaluations, it is likely doing one or more of the following: ● Manipulating the results by only showing parts of results that they feel benefit them ● Turning on settings in the product that are unrealistic for a real-world environment so as to appear more effective ● Treating the results as a competition instead of a learning opportunity and a chance to improve the product We have observed this trend for several years now, where errant claims, specifically unsanctioned in MITRE testing contracts and communications guidelines, are in fact growing. This sets our industry on a dangerous path toward misinformation and away from a shared reality within this critical sector. The industry owes it to itself and to end users of security solutions not to undermine its credibility by misrepresenting the technical basis for both detection and protection functions within endpoint protection, detection and response (EPDR) platforms.
