  • 🔋 A prototype for 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 has been presented in Lower Austria. These rely on 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀. This makes the technology more environmentally friendly and more resilient to uncertain supply chains. Conventional lithium-ion batteries, which are used in almost all electronic devices, have several drawbacks: their production is associated with high emissions, they are difficult to recycle, and the lithium deposits required for their production are unevenly distributed across the Earth. At CEST - Center of Electrochemical Surface Technology in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria, energy storage is being rethought from a new perspective. In so-called organic redox flow storage systems, electrical energy is stored in chemical compounds. Two organic solutions exchange electrons using electrical energy, which then release energy again when the two solutions flow back together. Only the elements carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen are needed. The advantage is that organic molecules can absorb and release electrons relatively easily. "𝘌𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘣 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯, 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺", says CEST project leader Christian Pichler. Pichler is confident that the first series production of organic redox flow batteries could be possible within five to ten years. He particularly recommends the technology for municipalities with their own photovoltaic or wind energy production and energy communities that need to store self-generated electricity for several days. __________________________ Enjoyed this Post? With its imperial charm and a unique blend of historic architecture and modern animal welfare, the zoo offers a special experience. Covering 𝟭𝟳 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀, it provides a habitat for 𝟲,𝟴𝟲𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟲𝟭𝟱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀, including many that are critically endangered. Six-time winner of "Best Zoo in Europe" (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2021), Schönbrunn Zoo has gained international recognition through remarkable breeding successes, such as the first-ever breeding of the Batagur river turtle and waving frogs. A favourite among visitors, the zoo has long been known for its giant pandas. While there are currently no pandas at Schönbrunn Zoo, a new pair is expected to arrive soon in cooperation with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Today, Schönbrunn Zoo is not only a popular leisure destination: it also serves as an educational hub, a research and training centre, and a strong advocate for conservation projects. With around 𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 per year, it remains one of Austria's top attractions! __________________________ Enjoyed this Post? For the first time, the Institute for Industrial Research (Industriewissenschaftliches Institut IWI) has conducted a comprehensive study on the economic value creation of the sector. Key findings: 𝟮,𝟵𝟵𝟴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 in the waste and resource management industry, employing around 𝟯𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, generated 𝟵.𝟭𝟳 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀 in revenue last year. Austria's waste management sector recycles 34% of the country's total waste, playing a vital role in the circular economy. In 2024, 600 million euros were invested, primarily in new recycling plants. The majority of companies are located in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and Styria. Across 3,500 facilities, Austria's waste and resource management industry collects, sorts, and processes around 74 million tonnes of waste annually. The sector is experiencing above-average growth, with revenues increasing by 80% over the past decade. As a core pillar of the circular economy, the industry carries significant responsibility in keeping raw materials in use for as long as possible.
