🌱 On 18 December, the Donau Soja Partners and Members Meeting in Ukraine brought together more than 80 guests in a friendly atmosphere. 📣 Matthias Krön, President of the Donau Soja Organisation, shared: "This is the first face-to-face partners' meeting in Ukraine in five years, and I am incredibly happy to see the revival of this tradition. Since 2017, we have united leaders of the non-GM soybean market and implemented ambitious initiatives to provide Europe with sustainable non-GM protein of European origin." 💬 Volodymyr Pugachov PhD. Pugachov, Executive Director for Eastern Europe, added: "As we approach the 150th anniversary of soybean cultivation in Ukraine, Soya has become the EU integration crop of Ukraine. 🌱 Soya harvest in 2024: Record of over 13 million tonnes in Europe Europe has reached a new soya harvest of more than 13 million tonnes, according to the latest Donau Soja Market Report. 👉 Highlights from the 2024 harvest: 🌾 Exceptional growth in Ukraine: A record harvest of over 6 million tonnes (+25%) with a 44% increase in cultivation area. 🇪🇺 EU’s harvest challenges: While cultivation area grew by 10%, extreme weather conditions led to a 3.4% drop in total yields. Serbia and Romania were hardest hit, with yields down by as much as 50%. ✅ Sustainability in focus: 1 million tonnes of soya certified to Donau Soja’s strict standards – non-GM, deforestation-free, reduced pesticide use, and compliant with international labour laws. 🌍 Dependence on imports: The EU imports 35 million tonnes of soya annually, much of it genetically modified from overseas. Europe's soya harvest 2024 highlights once more the relevance of Ukraine as leading soya producer in Europe. 🌱 Last week, our colleague Jasmin Karer represented Donau Soja at the IFF Braunschweig workshop, where she gave a well-received presentation on soybean production and use in Europe. With 32 participants from all over Europe, including machinery manufacturers and feed specialists, the workshop focused on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and on-farm processors in optimising their processes and enhancing product quality. By empowering regional value chains, these efforts play a crucial role in strengthening sustainable supply chains for soya in Europe. The agenda combined expert presentations on quality, soya analysis, hygiene and sampling with practical demonstrations such as a soya toaster and laboratory insights into urease activity. With 1 million tonnes of certified soya harvested in 2024 across 11 countries, our standards continue to set the benchmark for quality and quantity. 💚 💡 Key highlights: 🌍 10% of Europe’s non-GM production is certified under the Donau Soja/Europe Soya standards. 🏭 Approximately 200 collectors and 14 crushers, supported by 37 smaller processors. 🤝 Over 1,000 certified partners collaborate to strengthen sustainable supply chains. 🚜 Nearly 9,000 farmers are part of our growing network.
