IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has been in Japan this week, supporting local efforts to enhance nuclear safety and environmental remediation, as the country prepares to restart its nuclear power plants closed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Today, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, alongside experts from China, South Korea, and Switzerland, collected seawater samples near Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. These samples will undergo independent analysis by the Agency, as well as laboratories in Japan and those from today’s participating countries. 📄 atoms.iaea.org/437wn7j

Global nuclear energy capacity could more than double by 2050, as more countries turn to nuclear power to meet energy demands and cut carbon emissions. While small modular reactors (#SMRs) are under development, large reactors continue to take the lead. About 60 reactors are under construction worldwide. Almost all of them have a capacity of 1 GW or more, though many countries are also considering SMRs for the future.
