Growing up, Tani Tindano was told: ‘You can’t be a journalist if you have a visual disability.’ Check out what this accomplished journalist, now working at Burkina Faso’s national radio station, had to say in response. And to all our partners, programme participants and colleagues working hard to bring down persistent barriers to success: Happy International Day of People with Disabilities! ✊ Share Tani’s video to celebrate the power of disability inclusion in the workplace and beyond. #DisabilityDay #IDPD #EveryoneIncluded #GlobalGoals #CRPD United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs AFRICAN DISABILITY FORUM (ADF) European Disability Forum International Disability and Development Consortium International Disability Alliance

People with Visual Impairments Can Be Great News Anchors. Our very own mwambu musa made history yesterday by serving as an anchor on national Television NTV Uganda during the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This milestone is more than just a personal achievement for Musa; it symbolizes a transformative moment for the entire country. His role as an anchor highlights the reality that visually impaired people, too, can read the news and be at the forefront of shaping public narratives. The media plays a pivotal role in shaping societal perceptions and influencing the way we see diversity and inclusion. By giving Musa this platform, NTV Uganda has set a powerful example of how media can break barriers and challenge outdated stereotypes. We commend NTV for embracing this idea and becoming a role model in the media industry. This moment is a significant step toward creating an inclusive space where people with disabilities are given the chance to lead, contribute, and inspire. Through this we are reminded of the transformative power of inclusion and the boundless potential that arises when we break down barriers and provide equitable opportunities for all. #DisabilityInclusion #LeaveNoOneBehind #IDPD24 Light for the World Susan Nsibirwa, MCIM, MBA Silvester Kasozi Ministry of gender Labour and Social Development

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let’s break barriers in education and create opportunities for all learners! Children with disabilities are 7% less likely to finish primary school than their peers, with gaps widening to 10% in Zimbabwe and 14% in Iraq. These numbers likely underestimate the challenge, as many families in disadvantaged communities may not report disabilities. Technology can transform education, offering new ways to learn and thrive. In Kenya, visually impaired students are using tablets with screen readers to study independently. In the US, sign language storybooks are helping deaf preschoolers build essential reading skills. Tools like Braille devices, closed-caption videos, and speech-generating applications are improving literacy, numeracy, and social skills, helping students overcome barriers that once seemed insurmountable. Yet challenges persist. During the pandemic, only 12% of visually impaired learners had access to Braille materials, and just 10% of deaf students received audio transcripts. A lack of teacher training and limited access to assistive tools mean many are still left behind. Let’s ensure education solutions prioritize equity, sustainability, and learner-centered design, where technology supports—not replaces—the human connection. 👇 Explore #GEMReport's advocacy brief 👇 #AllmeansAll #TechOnOurTerms #EducationForAll CBM Global Disability Inclusion, Inclusion International, Light for the World, Humanity & Inclusion, Asociación Azul, World Blind Union

An estimated 1.3 billion people live with a significant disability today. No one understands the needs of persons with disabilities better than they do themselves. To achieve a more inclusive and accessible world, people with disabilities must have a seat at decision-making tables. “Persons with disabilities are changemakers, peacemakers and leaders,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday’s International Day of People with Disabilities. “Let’s work with persons with disabilities to achieve an inclusive and sustainable future for all people." https://lnkd.in/dkK3MGF 📸: UNDP
