Now that we have the fully assembled EDU (education unit) Flight Model with us, we’re diving into rigorous testing. Every facet is being meticulously examined to ensure everything works exactly as intended. These tests are essential to guarantee that our EDU is fully prepared for its mission. 💡🔍 #STS1 #austriainspace #tuwien #cubeSaturday #spaceengineering #cubesat #satellites #tuspaceteam

To boldly go where no student has gone before.
Info
Managed completely by university students and young adults, the TU Wien Space Team is an independent organization, whose members share a passion for aerospace. Over 200 people spend their free time to work on 7 different projects: The Hound: A record-breaking two-stage solid motor rocket. After a successful launch, we will be the first European Student team that reached space. µHoubolt: We are the first European student team that successfully launched and recovered a liquid-propellant rocket, using Ethanol and Nitrous Oxide to power our in-house developed engine. Penrose: Built to participate in the European Rocketry Challenge, Penrose will feature a self-developed Hybrid engine. As one of the first teams, we will use a cryogenic oxidizer. SpaceTeamSat1: A CubeSat, developed for educational purposes, in order to give pupils in Austria the possibility to run self-developed software in space. FIRST: Our FIRST program is made to introduce new members to rocket development and the Space Team. AcrossAustria: A hydrogen-powered drone, built to fly across Austria completely autonomous. GATE: With up to 10 kN of thrust, GATE is one of the most powerful liquid rocket engines, that has ever been built and fired by students. FRANZ: Our biggest test stand, FRANZ, named after the first Austrian astronaut Franz Viehböck, can handle up to 24 kN. It is designed with maximum flexibility in mind, so that it can be used with different propellant combinations. It saw it’ first use in June 2022 with the GATE hot fire test. CanSat: As part of the ESA CanSat programme, we develop can-sized satellites as an educational project together with Austrian high-schools.

🛰 As part of our ongoing CubeSat development, we recently carried out crucial environmental tests on our Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) at FOTEC. 🛰 These tests are a key step in validating our satellite’s design, ensuring it can withstand the harsh conditions it will face during launch and space operations. FOTEC provided invaluable technical support throughout the testing process, helping us set up and actually execute both shaker and shock tests.

🔍 What is the Flight Readiness Review (FRR)? 🔍 At #euroc2024, every rocket undergoes a detailed Flight Readiness Review (FRR) before launch preparations can begin. This thorough inspection, led by the Technical Evaluation Board (TEB), checks everything from the recovery system to avionics, ensuring the rocket is safe and ready for the next stage. We’re excited to share that our rocket successfully passed this crucial milestone! 🚀 With the green light from the TEB, we’re cleared to move our rocket to continue preparing for lift-off. Stay tuned as we get ready to take to the skies!

Did you know that the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology we use every day exists because of a Hollywood actress? Hedy Lamarr, beyond her fame on the silver screen, was a brilliant inventor. During World War II, she co-developed a frequency-hopping technology to prevent the interception of radio signals, a concept that laid the groundwork for today’s wireless communication like Wi-Fi & Bluetooth. Yet, despite her groundbreaking invention, Hedy Lamarr never received the recognition she deserved during her lifetime. Her contributions to science were overlooked for decades, and only in recent years has her story become more widely known. In honor of her legacy, we’ve named our rocket Hedy and our mission Project Lamarr. We’re thrilled to announce that Hedy will be flying at EuRoC 2024. We can’t wait to see her take off to the skies and continue Hedy’s tradition of innovation.
