🌍 Why is gender key to tackling open waste burning (OWB)? Did you know that: 🚮 26% of global waste is burned at the residential level—despite being illegal in many countries. 🔥 In LMICs, up to 65% of municipal solid waste is openly burned, and 37% of households rely on OWB for waste management. 🌫️OWB pollutes our air, land, and water, accelerating climate change, and endangering millions of lives. 📈 With household waste projected to increase by 70% by 2050, this issue is critical. Moments ago, the High-Level Launch of the #COP29 Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration came to a close in the Blue Zone in Baku, at COP29 Azerbaijan. ISWA President James Law represented the Association at this meeting, standing in solidarity with national and organisational members of the community that convened to emphasise their continuing endorsement of the Global Methane Pledge and applaud the COP Presidency's initiative to highlight the important role of waste management in reducing methane emissions. Inger Andersen, Executive Director UN Environment Programme, underscored the critical need for immediate action: “We need to see ambition, and we need to see action. Waste is growing, and methane from organic waste represents a significant challenge. Yet, by turning ‘waste’ into wealth, we can make meaningful progress.” The message of this declaration is very closely aligned to ISWA’s own Declaration for COP29, released in October, which highlights the critical role of organic waste management in curbing methane emissions. James Law urged the present delegates to "work together to turn waste into opportunity, pollution into progress, and methane reduction into a tangible climate victory. The stakes could not be higher" The session emphasised the need for immediate action, international collaboration, and innovation to address methane emissions effectively. ISWA is proud and excited to be part of a momentous occasion in the COP's history. We look forward to the progress that will surely follow this strong message and directive.

"Climate finance for fast action in methane emissions in the waste sector" was the title of a panel discussion at the Global Methane Action Hub Pavilion. Victor Hugo Argentino de Morais Vieira from Instituto Pólis and Fictor Ferdinand of YPBB (Yaksa Pelestari Bumi Berkelanjutan) presented community-based composting projects in Brazil and Indonesia respectively. Interesting insights into the challenges of financing waste management projects - especially on a small and medium scale - also came from Berliana Yusuf from Climate Policy Initiative and Peter Simões from ISWA International Solid Waste Association. But the strongest message delivered Soledad Vidal of the National Association of Waste Pickers of Chile (ANARCH), representing the 20 million waste pickers worldwide: "Waste pickers are providing a service but they are not valued. We have a voice and we finally are visible. Still, at this COP there is only one waste picker and that is me. That has to change."
