Today Access Health and Community acknowledges that 17 years ago on this day, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of the nation for past laws, policies and practices that have impacted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations and their descendants. The phrase Stolen Generation refers to the countless number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families under government policy and direction. It is estimated that during the active period of the policy, between 1 in 10 and 1 in 3 Indigenous children were removed from their families and communities. Access Health and Community marks the anniversary of this significant event. It is an important time to acknowledge how generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been affected, and continue to be affected, by the past Government policies and practices. Together, let's ensure that the voices of the Stolen Generations are heard and their experiences never forgotten. On January 26, we come together as a community to acknowledge the history of this day in Australia. For many, it marks a time of mourning and reflection, as it represents the beginning of colonisation and the profound impact it had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. At AccessHC, we believe January 26 is not a day for celebration. We recognise that it is a day of loss and dispossession. 📅 Access Health and Community support staff to take an alternative day off instead of the public holiday where possible and stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our community and our organisation on their ongoing journey for justice and equality.
