Fabulous news!!!!
-Win for vaccine equity and small island nations- What a week! Great news for our region from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance board meeting today! We just agreed to policy changes for Gavi’s 6th Strategic Period that will mean PNG 🇵🇬, Timor Leste 🇹🇱, Solomon Islands 🇸🇧, and Lao PDR 🇱🇦 will retain or regain eligibility for critical support for #immunisation programs and vaccine access! The decision tecognises the unique nature of small island states and powerful advocacy from Pacific and Southeast Asian voices. Australia is proud to have supported our neighbours through this changes as part of our joint constituency with the US and the Republic of Korea. Thank you to Indonesia for their incredible hosting of the Gavi Board Meeting, and to all ministers, board members and representatives for their thoughtful deliberations. Particular shout out to 🇮🇩 Minister for Health, His Excellency Budi Sadikin for his leadership, passion and enthusiasm for health equity and innovation, for sharing his insights to help ensure Gavi is responding to our region's needs and supporting #HealthForAll Together we can ensure the global health architecture works for everyone, everywhere, including our beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Such a privilege to work with this wonderful group of women! As always, Family Planning Australia brought their incredible skill and passion to the room.
In November, Family Planning Australia's International Nurse Educators, Vijeta and Emily provided Master Training to 10 cervical screening providers in Papua New Guinea. These Master Trainers are equipped with the skills and knowledge to train health care workers and serve as important technical leaders in their provinces. Congratulations to the participants! #ECCWP #HealthyRegions #CervicalScreening #ReproductiveHealth #DFAT | Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade | Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney

Rachel Nunn’s podcast series on SDG 3 is worth checking out! Fantastic series with great guests from Australia and the region (at least the ones that preceded me!) and a wonderful, knowledgeable interviewer. Oh and the episode on 3.8 below :)
The 7th - and second-last - episode in our latest series of Good Will Hunters has just aired, with Australia's Ambassador for Global Health, Dr Lucas de Toca PSM. We discussed SDG3.8 which targets universal health coverage including financial risk protection and access to quality essential health care services, vaccines and medicines, for all people, everywhere. It's the target which encompasses all of the other targets - and it is perhaps the most difficult to attain. To me the idea of universal health coverage, in practice, feels quite utopian and yet it is a target we must, must work towards. In this episode, we unpack the Ambassador's work to support the achievement of universal health coverage in the Indo-Pacific. We speak about how stretched the health workforce is in our region, why Australia has shifted to a greater investment in primary health care since Covid-19, why financing health is so difficult for so many countries, and how Australia can leverage our immense domestic health expertise to better support the region. Regular listeners would know the latter has been a recurrent theme in every episode of this series!
