AgriFutures evokeAG 2024 held in Perth, Western Australia. Feels like agritech is getting real traction. My key takeaways from this massive event: 1. There's a huge amount of noise in this space now. The imperative for tech providers to be able to communicate how well they understand the problems and how their solution addresses is critical. There's still loads of amazing start-ups that aren't pitching effectively IMO. 2. For producers in particular, integration of a range of tech across all facets of the business is a challenge. Solutions are fragmented. 3. In some cases, for example, the adoption of lightweight autonomous farming robots, there is a fundamental need to change the way you farm. Successful adopters describe modification of production and business processes as vital and a preparatory stage prior to adoption of the machines. 4. For me, the connections with people and the ecosystem were more important than "the sessions." 5. Some of the simple stuff, from a practical sense, around how we can build thriving, sustainable agritech ecosystems still remains a black art that people don't speak about in specifics and tangibles. Rather, there were, still, lots of motherhood and apple pie statements. 6. The Give principle in cultivating the ecosystem remains super important to me. I will never tire of the look of suprose and gratitude on people's faces when you gift them opportunity and connection for no other reason than you want them to succeed. 7. Early adopters are so brave! They not only take a risk with their business but also get actively white-anted in their communities. I don't think we realise how much this is a barrier to adoption. 8. In addition, I think prosperity in the form of low debt to equity ratios, coupled with good commodity prices, is probably a pretty big disincentive to change! But that's not rocket science. I wonder how we can drill down into that data? Might influence target areas. 9. I didn't realise how different the soils of Western Australia would be to Queensland. I was surprised! 10. I have a better appreciation of the challenges of doing business from WA from logistics impost of the distance. The same as me here but amplified!
