Congratulations to both Santos Ltd and Beach Energy Ltd on the launch of one of the world’s largest CO2 sequestration facilities, the Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage Project in South Australia. Our CEO, Craig de Laine, recently attended the official opening of Moomba CCS and was pleased to see the project not only operational but also progressing towards its 1.7mtpa nameplate capacity. Moomba CCS represents a significant step forward in both carbon reduction efforts in Australia and the continued development of this important industry. Is it better to compost organic waste OR convert it to biomethane through anaerobic digestion? Short answer: when it comes to large scale waste management, anaerobic digestion is a fast and efficient process that also offers an opportunity for the methane byproduct to be captured and used as renewable gas. Long answer: While composting is useful for managing small scale household organic waste (especially if you want to create nutrients for your garden), anaerobic digestion offers advantages when it comes to large scale waste management including creating digestate (similar to compost) AND renewable energy (biomethane). When it comes to handling large volumes of waste, anaerobic digestion can require less space and much less time than large scale composting. The byproduct of methane can be captured and used as biomethane. And the digestate, that is produced from the anaerobic digestion process, is rich in nutrients and can be used to improve soil structure and fertility, just like compost. Natural gas is playing a significant role during WA's current heatwave, at times delivering more than half of the state's electricity needs. A diverse energy mix will be essential for ensuring reliability throughout Australia’s energy transition.
Extreme heat and high humidity drove record electricity demand in Western Australia’s main power grid, the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), on Monday evening. Peak electricity demand reached 4,486 MW at 6:30pm, surpassing the previous all-time high of 4,233 MW on 18 February 2024. AEMO interim Executive General Manager for WA Nicola Falcon said: “AEMO spends months working with industry to prepare for high-demand conditions in summer, including procuring extra capacity through the Non-Co-Optimised Essential System Service and Supplementary Capacity mechanisms.” “The NCESS procurement process, alone, has helped bring an additional 425 MW of battery storage into the SWIS in time for the current summer,” she said. When choosing a cooktop, there are several factors to consider, including purchase and installation cost, energy use and emissions, and reliability. Below are some factors to consider. Purchase and Installation Costs: ● The mixed gas and induction cooktop is the most expensive to purchase and install, with a price tag of about $5,499** ● Switching from gas to electric cooking can require additional expenses such as a kitchen wiring upgrade (typically costing between $1,000 and $4,000) not to mention the purchase of new pots and pans compatible with induction cooking⚛ Energy Costs and Emissions in Victoria✳: ● Gas cooktops have the lowest annual energy cost (average $18) and the lowest emissions (average 32 kg CO2-e) compared with electric grid-powered cooktops. ● Conversely, electric coil or plate cooktops powered by the electricity grid are the most expensive to operate, with an annual energy cost of about $47 and average emissions of approximately 146 kg CO2-e. Reliability During Blackouts: ● Gas cooktops and mixed gas and induction cooktops are the only types that remain functional during a blackout. This is a significant advantage for households concerned about power outages. *https://lnkd.in/gQMaVxBz **https://lnkd.in/g5Cce2Mi ⚛ https://lnkd.in/gf56s2Ge ✳ https://lnkd.in/gqwf8R7 https://lnkd.in/ehZFEVk

Biomethane is a compelling player in Australia’s renewable energy landscape – but one that doesn’t get much airtime in the media. This renewable gas, derived from the decomposition of organic waste, has the same chemical properties as natural gas, making it interchangeable and allowing for seamless integration into existing networks, appliances, and industrial equipment without the need for modification. There are potential significant benefits from embracing biomethane! Industries that traditionally rely on gas for high-temperature processes—like manufacturing bricks or fertilisers—could transition towards more sustainable practices. With the potential to generate 26,000 new jobs and contribute $10 billion to GDP by 2030* (as identified by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) 2021 Bioenergy Roadmap), the bioenergy sector is not just a renewable initiative: it’s a potential economic opportunity! Biomethane is a prime example of a circular economy at work—utilising organic waste that would otherwise contribute to pollution, thereby enhancing resource efficiency. Companies like Jemena are leading the charge in New South Wales, exploring the feasibility of biomethane production to meet the energy needs of both residential and industrial consumers. However, for this vision to scale-up around the country, collaborative efforts between industry and government are vital! The global biomethane industry is expanding, but it requires sustained policy support to unlock biomethane's full potential in Australia. The path forward is one of cooperation and innovation, to deliver a more sustainable energy future. A survey of 4,974 Australian households* has revealed that instantaneous gas water heaters boast the longest lifespan of all hot water systems, averaging 18 years before beginning to break down. In contrast, heat pumps have the shortest lifespan among the water heater options, lasting an average of 12 years. This shorter lifespan is likely due to the more complex technology involved in heat pump water heaters, which extract heat from the surrounding air to heat water. The same survey discovered that instantaneous gas water heaters also have the lowest likelihood of requiring maintenance in any given year. This low maintenance requirement is likely attributable to their simpler design, lacking a storage tank that can be prone to issues such as sediment buildup. Added to this, Instantaneous gas water heaters are also known for their rapid warm-up time. They heat water on demand, eliminating the need for a storage tank and resulting in virtually no warm-up time. *Bis Oxford Economics, The Hot Water System Market in Australia Report, 2024; analysis by SJT Consulting Services Pty Ltd.

Meet Benjy – he’s one of our Meter Readers in Melbourne. He is one of the readers who contributed to over 8 million meter reads in total this year. On average, a Meter Reader like Benjy covers the equivalent of 80 marathons in distance a year while he collects meter data! Benjy has shared his top tips to ensure he can read your gas meter every time. 🌿 Keep it clear (don’t obstruct with overgrown garden, objects) 🔓 Allow access (if your gate is locked and you’re not home we might not be able to get access) 🐶 Secure your dog (our staff follow strict protocols when it comes to dogs to keep them safe from the risk of a dog related injury. If they can see signs of a dog – like a lead, water bowl, toys – or there is a record in our notes of an unrestrained dog on the property, we require them to speak with the property owner before safely entering the property) #GasNetwork #BehindTheScenes #AskYourMeterReader Service Stream
