🌿 Insights from Ross Garnaut’s Book Launch: Let's Tax Carbon 🌏 Earlier this month, Professor Ross Garnaut launched Let’s Tax Carbon (And Other Ideas for a Better Australia) at The University Club Of Western Australia, sparking vital conversations on transitioning to a low-carbon economy. AgZero2030 was proud to have several working group members, including Hamish Maclean, Larissa Taylor, Philip Gardiner, and Alex Gardner, in attendance. Key insights from the event, shared by Phil and Alex, as well as Meri Fatin (founder of WA Climate Leaders and a key AgZero2030 supporter), emphasised the urgency for bold climate action and the role a carbon tax could play in driving change. 📖 Read more about their reflections and Garnaut’s vision here: https://lnkd.in/gTe9swTh

🌱 Celebrating Five Years of AgZero2030! 🌱 This month marks a powerful milestone for AgZero2030 as we celebrate five years of advocating for climate action in agriculture. From our beginnings in 2019 to our recent landmark event, The Power Shift, we've seen the industry’s growing interest in renewable energy, electrification, and opportunities to revitalise rural economies. Our mission remains steadfast: supporting WA agriculture in the transition to carbon neutrality and sharing the stories that inspire change. Our Chair, Simon Wallwork, penned an article reflecting on our journey, our goals, and the path forward. "As we look back on the progress made from 2019 to 2024, the change is undeniable. Discussions around climate action have become more open and constructive. There’s now planning and effort from both the public and private sectors aimed at decarbonising agriculture. Carbon farming opportunities have emerged, and renewable energy is increasingly recognised as a valuable opportunity for our farm businesses and communities alike. Yet, there are still obstacles to overcome." Read Simon's full article on our website to learn more about how AgZero2030 is helping agriculture lead the way on climate action. 🌐 https://lnkd.in/gAayGHuM

Last month, AgZero2030 held its annual forum, with the theme this year being "The Power Shift: Transitioning Farm Communities to Renewables". On the day, a panel discussion was held to question what Western Australia’s agricultural communities look like with a focus on renewable energy and sustainability. Facilitated by AgZero Chairman Simon Wallwork, the panel featured experts Prof Ray Wills, Professor Petra Tschakert, Christopher Jones, Hamish Maclean, and Glen Holland. The discussion explored the electrification of farms, the socio-political aspects of energy transitions, and the steps needed to make renewable energy accessible to regional areas. In Australia, fields of solar panels are often just called rooftops. Elsewhere solar farms can be utility scale generation facilities. Or a solar farm can simply be just a farm powered by solar. Electric harvest 100x more energy from 1 ha of solar panels, harvested every day as electricity, than from 1 ha soy beans, harvested once a year andconverted to make biofuel. A solar-powered farm can power the farm house, outbuildings and sheds, and the vehicle fleet with farm-harvested energy from the sun. An electrified farm needs less energy than a fossil fuelled farm - more than 60% less. An electrified tractor including electric motors instead of hydraulics is even more efficient (see below). And that self-generated electricity is not only cheaper than the grid, backed by batteries, brings a higher level of reliability than from grid supply, most particularly in more remote regional areas. Sure, Aussie farms are bigger, and most certainly most of the kit will be larger. That doesn't mean we can't electrify, just in ANZAC spirit, we need to do it bigger.

💡👩🌾 What does the future of renewable energy look like in Australia’s agricultural regions? That’s the question being tackled by our first group of panelists at today’s forum - The Power Shift: Transitioning Farm Communities to Renewables. Prof Ray Wills, Petra Tschakert, Hamish Maclean, Glen Holland and Chris Jones unpack the tangible changes and how regional communities can leverage them to their advantage. Chaired by Simon Wallwork, the group also looked at the associated risks and how they can be managed. Are you at today’s event? Mike Casey was a former tech bro in Sydney, who, after selling his software startup, decided to move back to New Zealand where he grew up to become a farmer. Now he grows electric cherries, has electrified every machine on his farm, powers those machines with his farm solar system, and is saving a total of $40,000 a year in energy bills. He is also the CEO of a charity called Rewiring Aotearoa and has a goal of electrifying 10 million fossil fuel machines in NZ by 2030, because it saves on emissions but most importantly, it saves money. Mike is set to be one of the incredible speakers at our event in Perth on June 10 - The Power Shift: Transitioning Farm Communities to Renewables! Tickets for this event are only $20 and can be purchased via Eventbrite - https://lnkd.in/gPgsjrGz #NetZero #RenewableEnergy #SustainableEnergy #EnergyTransition #ClimatePolicy
