Last weekend, The Australian National University School of Medicine and Psychology and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) ran our first co-badged and designed short course “Principles of Aeromedical Certification for Medical Specialists”. This two-day course equips medical specialists with the critical knowledge and skills needed to evaluate medical conditions and environmental stressors, enabling them to provide expert advice on pilots' fitness for flight. Participants from a variety of medical specialties heard from our faculty, Professor Tracy Smart AO, Prof. Gordon Cable AM, Dr Kate Manderson and Dr Tony Hochberg about the principals of aerospace medicine, the role of the CASA, and how they can contribute to flight safety. By empowering these specialists with aeromedical expertise, pilots can confidently access tailored medical advice to manage their health, maintain their ability to fly, or return to the skies. In June, Dr Zena Assaad from the ANU College of Engineering, Computing & Cybernetics School of Engineering led the first theory to practice workshop in collaboration with ANU Institute for Space | InSpace and Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). This workshop focussed on trustworthy autonomy and AI in safety-critical domains.
