There is an old military saying: “if the army wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one”. The same could be said about having a child in the service, especially if you are a mother, according to Maureen Montalban, an active military officer and psychologist. The PhD candidate at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at ANU has studied how Defence manages women’s healthcare and career during pregnancy, birth and motherhood. “A lot of what we do in the military is tied to our identity.” Read more: https://bit.ly/48YyJGa Maureen Montalban | Defence Australia | Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

🌟 Impact case study: Shaping modern neuroscience ANU research has paved the way for modern treatments of depression and epilepsy, with groundbreaking discoveries that continue to save lives today. In the early 1960s, research led by Professor Sir John Eccles (Professor of Physiology at ANU from 1952-1966) revolutionised our understanding of neurotransmitters and earned him the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Eccles’ work continues to shape neuroscience today, demonstrating how early scientific breakthroughs can lead to decades of medical advancements. Today, the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience (EIN) in the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) at The Australian National University brings together visionary neuroscientists, driving groundbreaking discoveries and deepening our understanding of the intricate workings of the brain. 🌟 Today also marks the 75th anniversary of laying the foundation stone of JCSMR – a humble beginning that sparked a legacy of impact around the world.
