Energy storage is a critical component in the clean energy transition. ARENA is granting $4.8 million to Gelion for their innovative and unique sulphur battery tech. This project will focus on the development of two different higher density battery chemistries. The technology could help in EVs and electric aviation to support longer ranges. ARENA is committed to backing projects like this helping to find more efficient, less expensive, sustainable energy storage solutions. $14.1 million will go towards two innovative projects helping sustainable aviation fuels take flight. ARENA is providing funding to Ampol and GrainCorp for separate studies to develop renewable fuel alternatives for Australia’s airline industry: - $8m to Ampol for the ‘Brisbane Renewable Fuels Pre-FEED Study’ - $6.1m to GrainCorp for the ‘SAF Oilseed Crushing Facility Pre-Deployment Study’ Domestic aviation accounts for approximately 2% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. These projects represent an important step in addressing the challenges to decarbonise this high emissions industry. 4 billion tonnes of goods move through Australian roads annually, with heavy transport contributing 44% of the country's transport emissions. Without change, emissions could rise by 16% by 2040. ‘We have the solutions, and they are already in use in many other countries.’ Facing the challenge head on, Sita Holtslag, Europe Director for CALSTART, believes the sector can be decarbonised. ‘We’re not just talking about pilots anymore; we’re in series production,’ she said at ARENA’s latest Insights Forum. ‘This is a systems change, and it will need all stakeholders in the ecosystem to change together.’ ARENA is supporting this transition with the $100 million Driving the Nation program supporting decarbonising heavy transport. ARENA is helping to reduce emissions in one of Australia’s most carbon intensive industries. $10 million will support Fortescue to develop first of a kind fast chargers for heavy mine site vehicles. The 6 MW fast chargers will be able to charge 240 tonne battery electric trucks in under 30 mins. This funding is awarded under ARENA’s Industrial Transformation Stream, supporting emissions reduction at industrial facilities in regional Australia. With heavy transport contributing to around a quarter of the mining industry’s emissions, this technology offers solutions to address these issues.
