Tomorrow is the first day of Autumn and, while temperatures will begin to cool, it's important to remember to think UV and not heat! UV can remain quite high during Autumn as there are a broad range of factors which impact the UV index including clouds, ozone, reflection from surfaces, and location. UV varies in intensity on any given day so it's important to continue to check the index which you can do anytime, anywhere using the SunSmart Global UV app: https://lnkd.in/ecjqFkF This weekend, our #FridayForecast is still showing that the UV index is extreme (11+) throughout the north, and high (6-7) and very high (8-10) for Australia's south. When the UV Index is 3 or more remember to: 🧥Slip 🧴Slop 👒Slap 🌴Seek 🕶️Slide

Today we celebrate Ida Noddack's birthday. The would-be 129-year-old was credited with discovering nuclear fission, a rare earth element, and was one of the first German women to study #chemistry. The nuclear energy used around the world today to produce electricity is through nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is a reaction or process where atoms are separated, releasing energy. Ida was the first to articulate this process in her 1934 paper 'On Element 93'. She will also be remembered for discovering #rare #earth #element Rhenium. Rhenium is mixed with other metals for use in aircraft engines, and in the manufacture of unleaded fuel. The three-time #NobelPrize nominated #scientist passed away in September 1978. However, her legacy lives on. #HappyBirthday #OnThisDay #WomenInSTEM

Today we celebrate the birthday of Heinrich Hertz, the would-be 168 year-old who proved the existence of #radiowaves. Hertz was one of many scientists to set his scientific mind on proving the theory of electromagnetism put forth by James Clerk Maxwell a number of years prior. His theory was that light was made of #electromagnetic waves. A spark (literally) during one of Hertz’s lectures got him thinking and through a number of experiments involving zinc spheres, copper wires and spark gaps (small gaps in circuits) he was able to prove Maxwell’s radio waves theory. Radio waves were originally known as Hertzian waves. Today, however, the unit of frequency (wave cycles per second) is named after #Hertz. His discovery led the way for the #wireless #communication that we rely heavily on today.
