ASIS is building its next generation of officers. Last week, Director-General Kerri Hartland spoke to students at the ANU National Security College about its secret overseas mission, the mythology surrounding the human intelligence profession, and the importance of separating reality from fiction.

About us
The Australian Secret Intelligence Service accesses secrets, disrupts threats and helps secure Australia. ASIS is Australia's foreign intelligence collection agency. We collect and distribute secret foreign intelligence, information which would otherwise be unavailable to Australia, to protect Australia and its interests. We obtain intelligence to support Australian Government objectives. To do this, we largely rely on what we call "human intelligence" - information that comes directly from people. ASIS was established in 1952. While we may not be a household name, ASIS has been quietly protecting Australia and its way of life for over 70 years. For many years we did this in secret. ASIS is now well integrated into Australia's National Intelligence Community, contributing vital human intelligence that helps Australia navigate an increasingly complex world. Importance of confidentiality: All applications for employment with ASIS are handled in the strictest confidence. It is essential that you maintain a similar level of confidentiality and that you do not discuss your application with anyone, as this could impact your career with ASIS.

I was also able to dispel a number of myths about the Australian Secret Intelligence Service in the process!
